cinemark to run the beckerhead travesty
after reading this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9599209

I called the local cinemark, where I WAS planning to go see the latest HP movie. I asked if they were, in fact, running promos for beckerhead's disgusting propoganda. the young man who answered the phone told me (apparently not understanding the word "preview") proudly, that they would be running this event live on 2 dec, and informed me that no other theatre would be carrying it any earlier.

I told him he had misunderstood my question, that I was not looking to see this crap, but was, in fact, calling to complain about the chain supporting this lunatic. also told him that I will be finding another chain where I can see movies from now on, as I will not be supporting any institution that supports him.

not much, but the best I could do at short notice.

2. I just sent them the following e-mail....
I'm sorry I saw Harry Potter at your theater Friday morning.

Your theater will be showing a Glen Beck movie soon.

The man is a deranged propagandist and just plain dangerous.

I go to the Century in Mountain View due to the convenience.

I, and my family will now be going exclusively to the AMC in Cupertino.

Shame on you for allowing dangerous propaganda to be shown in your theater.

16. I think it was the best HP film so far
It was very true to the spirit of the book. In other words, a total downer. :P

14. Fathom Events is not exclusive to Cinemark
They are a company that books many acts including Glen Beck. They also buy ad time and lease the screens from theaters that run digital preshow ads. That means AMC, Regal, Cinemark, Century and others will all play Fathom Event Shows.

That includes The Sound of Music and Grease sing-a-longs as well as MST 3000.

9. unfortunately, our local, independent theatre, cannot show things like HP
interestingly, it wasn't even able to show michael moore's "capitalism"--disagreements with the distributors.

Remind the theatre chains what a bad business decision it is to play this crap.

10. I'm heavily considering doing a review of the movie for this website.
Don't worry - it will be strictly for comedic purposes and I'll use this as my guide:

20. This is a little ridiculous. Do you boycott bookstores that carry his books?
Hey, I hate Beck too but this 'event' is put on by Fathom Events which as someone already pointed out, show all sorts of events at movie theatres.

Doesn't do any good to boycott a certain theatre or chain because of this.

21. no, I call and complain about the crap being sold (amoung other things)
you can denigrate those standing up to this kind of insanity all you want, it really doesn't matter.

by the way, in case you haven't been following all of this, cinemark supports lovely little things like prop 8, and other assorted reichwing causes. reason enough to boycott them, don't you think?

it is fascinating to me to hear so many people supporting these chains, stating that they have no control over what is being shown in previews, as though they were helpless little victims. a pathetic commentary.

22. This does sound a bit like Freepers boycotting Michael Moore
This is not even a regular movie booking, but rather, Beck/Fathom pay to RENT the theaters for one showing, and pay to run the promos before other movies. That's one reason the ticket price is something like $25, to cover the cost of the rental/ads.

Michael Moore at least gets his movies released the usual way and theaters choose to book the films. It could very well be that if they're afraid if they refuse to allow Beck/Fathom to rent the theaters, they'll get sued or at least publicly chastised for "censorship" and denial of Beck's First Amendment Rights, blah blah blah.

Supporting free speech means permitting even the crazy talk to be heard.
