There is NO better source of news on the interwebs than DU, none
and I mean that.

1. K&R. You're right.
Folks here miss nothing and I often read about things here that don't show up in the MSM until days later. Here's to DU, "the most trusted name in news," LOL. :toast:

More people need to get their news from DU "than from any other source." :(

across the world in different time zones and using all manner of news sources.

6. Agreed
If I need to know something before anyone else, DU is it.

Differences aside, I think we all do a pretty good job of being ahead of the curve.

7. I would agree. Especially if there is breaking news. It's like having thousands of reporters...
...on the case. Some topics get more attention than others, of course, but generally it is the place to be to learn about things you wanna know about.

Oh, and it's also a great place to get pissed off by people. Comes with the territory.

14. Maybe that's why TV news always mentions political *blogs* but not forums
with respect to political info on the internet. The feedback and integration of pertinent information on forums like DU pulls back the TV and newspaper curtain (and is making them more accountable year by year).

15. !!
That's an excellent observation

The M$M wants news and information to be one way only. 'Blog' often conjures up a vague notion of someone rattling on and about nothing, no feedback from the audience.

a lot of missteps if they tuned in to it more. If I was the president I think I'd skim the Greatest page in addition to reading a few letters a day.

25. i'm sort of choking on the Irony, here.
i don't mean to be a horrible snob, but you people do read something other than internet websites, right? those smelly, moldy things called "books?" magazines, even? or: "journals?" i suppose not every person here has actually handled a "monograph."

look, i'm as pro-new information theory as they come. really, i am. but let's all check ourselves here. or is this a fund drive thingee? meh, i'll probably get banned again for saying that. but i love DU, i always have. it's where the energy is, where the young people come to express new ideas, and for all it conforms to the message "our purpose is to elect democrats" i enjoy it a great deal.

still. sorry, but no. DU is not the "best" site on which to discover important information about american politics. it's not Facebook, this isn't a popularity contest. grow up a bit, and recognize that there is hard work coming, and it's coming for *you,* kids. not an oldster like me. i'll be dead when they shut the internets off for the Little People. no, you young folk will have to face an ugly future with hard choices and even harder decisions.

yes, it's important to stay informed. no, DU won't always be here to tell you what to think, how to be outraged, why a TV show is "important." the neofascism that is barreling down at you? much, much uglier than any movie you've ever seen.

let me recommend some. that's how americans communicate, after all, via movies and TV.

"Lust, Caution."
"Black Book."
"The Sophie Scholl Story."

there are others, but those are a good start, and are your future. if you like books, try Marguerite Duras' "The War: A memoire." it's in french, but you can find the english translation pretty easily.

27. Well, it's time.
Finally took the plunge and registered.

Been lurking since 2003-2004.

I agree 100% with this OP, which led me to finally registering here.

This is the BEST site for news. I say this as a Canadian that has pretty fair news reporting, on the whole, in our country.

I still come here first - every morning.

Kudos to a great site.

I will donate on the week-end. I gave my credit card to my mom for her birthday...(on 2nd thought -maybe it will be awhile before I can donate :banghead: )

Take care everyone.

Oh yeah...

My first 'K&R, lol

For members to throw what they know into the same pot and walk away know more and more broadly.

I love that about this place. :loveya:
