Three protesters from Westboro Baptist Church, the Kansas congregation best known for staging "God Hates Fags" protests at funerals for U.S. service members, showed up at Wayne State for all of 23 minutes Thursday morning to protest the Jewish student group, Hillel of Metro Detroit.

Counter-protesters outnumbered the Westboro contingent by a factor of at least 10.

Westboro claims on their website that Jews killed Jesus and worship false idols. Virulent anti-Semitism, along with an equally virulent hatred for gays, Muslims, Catholics, the U.S. military and a deep abiding belief that Mr. Rogers is in hell, is part of the rich tapestry of crazy that is the cult's worldview.

Westboro’s stunts, which are more a racket trolling for lawsuits than any kind of religious expression, were met this morning in Detroit with a festive and irreverent counter-protest that pretty much chased away the two adults and one child rallying against Judaism in all its forms.

11. Most adults in the Westboro gang are lawyers; they know the limits, and they aren't violent.

They are reprehensible, but they aren't (physically) dangerous. While they are rightly classified an official hate group by the SPLC and others, their whole public theater schtick is a deranged exercise in freedom of speech. They are non-violent; the Teabaggers, on the other hand...

Opposition outnumbers 3 Kansas church protestors at Islamic Center

DEARBORN -- A Kansas church group known for protesting soldiers’ funerals was here this morning, holding an anti-Muslim demonstration at the Islamic Center of America.

As parents dropped their children off at the Muslim American Youth Academy next-door to the mosque, three members of the Westboro Baptist Church stood on a grassy median along Altar Road, carrying signs that said, “Imams are pedophiles,” and “God hates Muslims.”

On the other side of the driveway was a larger counter protest of about 25-30 people. The group and the causes they identified with were diverse.

Some there said they were representing Muslims upset about what they saw as a hateful attack on their faith.

Others wore their Christian caps and for the most part said they were there to denounce what they consider to be an “un-Christian” message.

There were secular types, too. Michigan militia members lined up with the counter protesters and said they were there to “keep citizens safe.” Some people identified themselves only as residents that disagreed with Westboro’s stance, which is most often anti-gay.
