Palin Rips American Idol
The Associated Press got an advance look at Sarah Palin's new book, America by Heart, and notes she blasts the television show American Idol and its "talent-deprived" contestants who suffer from "the cult of self-esteem."

Writes Palin: "No one they have encountered in their lives -- from their parents to their teachers to their president -- wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth. So they grew up convinced that they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson."

4. Huh?
I would have thought she would be a big fan of a show like American Idol.

Palin's main base of supporters aren't going to like this for sure.

20. Either that, or she's just pulling our chain
with a brilliant bit of meta-irony.

9. WOW. It always so funny to hear someone making a criticism that applies so well to themselves.
And seeming so completely oblivious about it.

I'm sure everyone who appears on that show is genuinely talented. :sarcasm:

He is constantly promoting his former American Idol contestant daughter

14. She's wrong. Some no-talents cannot be discouraged.
I knew a kid in the 60's who was preparing himself to be the next Al Jolson. And he was really terrible. But he loved to perform. I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up to auditions to belt out Swanee for the judges.

Bad or not. You shouldn't stop people from singing.

19. That is funny.
I lived in a small town who had someone just like that, except he was an older man. When we had our town festival, he had a float all to himself. He would belt out Jolson songs. For a long time, he was in blackface. Someone in his family finally made him stop THAT. The local bar had one of his songs in the jukebox. We all laughed, but the guy was deadly serious.

Is there something about Jolson that brings out terrible singers?

26. Jolson was unique. Had a great talent, though not for singing especially.
He was the Sinatra, Elvis, Beatles of his day. Think of how many Elvis impersonators there are.

There was a guy in the fifties named Norman Brooks. Sounded just like Jolson (for better or worse :)) and had a record that got some play. I saw him on a TV show talking about it as a problem. ... Here's a sample of Norman. It's amazing.

I think that Jolson worked well on stage, and his talents didn't translate well to the screen. He worked the crowd.

22. Welcome to the Wide World of Projection.
She hates their "culture of self-esteem" because she knows SHE'S really the one who's special and they cheapen her specialness by pretending to the throne.
