President Obama to award George H.W. Bush the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Source: New York Daily News

President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush.

The magnanimous gesture of bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor to the 41st U.S. President came a day after ex-President George W. Bush gave a respectful nod to Obama at the groundbreaking of his library in Dallas.

“The decisions of governing are on another President’s desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me,” Bush said at the site of his future library at Southern Methodist University.

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, St. Louis (baseball) Hall of Famer Stan Musial, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wall Street wizard Warren Buffett top the list of scholars, athletes, artists, achievers and do-gooders who will be presented the award at a White House ceremony early next year.

Tell me this isn't true.

If so, then the NY Daily News should be sued immediately!

It doesn't give any real reasons for the award. Just that Bush did such and such in the past.

...explain why they are receiving the award. I did think that was odd.

the Clinton fans who spend most of their time slamming Obama don't seem to make the same distinctions.

In fact, some of the anti-Obama crowd have taken to the claiming "at least Bush" did this or that.

Yes, I'll point to hypocrisy.

didn't lobby for it, he had NOTHING to do with it. All he did was not veto it. And it would have passed over his veto if he had been opposed to it.

Sure, it was great legislation - to which he was a bystander.

If he had, for any bizarre reason, vetoed it, it would have passed over his veto.

Once it came out of the Senate it was a done deal. He gets no credit for it.

Star athletes and musicians,a prominent civic minded tycoon, leading European politician and, and...a man responsible for the deaths of thousands of his own countrymen and women (to say nothing of other people in the world.) Oh yeah and throw in the final stripping of middle class ecomomic well-being in his own country as well.

Gosh, to get any more well-rounded than that, you'd have to add Sadam Hussein himself.

7. I think a lot of Americans (a majority?) really don't follow politics,
describe themselves as "moderates " (translation - I don't have an opinion) and never get past catch phrases such as "I'm against negative advertising", "I believe the parties should work together", "I believe the government should balance the budget just like my family does."

By visibly reaching out to Republicans, Obama will either

1. actually get the Republicans to the table to work together ( stop laughing!)

or

2. finally get through to the blockheads that the Republicans will never work together with Democratic officials for the good of the country.

...if you're proposing that your second point has a chance of coming to fruition (even if the first doesn't), I think you also know deep-down (and maybe not so deep-down) this also doesn't stand much of a chance of actually coming to pass.

They're called "blockheads" for a reason.

55. Actually, I'm looking forward to the new House of Representatives
beginning impeachment proceedings against Obama. People were pretty disgusted with Clinton when he was impeached. Granted, having office sex with a young woman may not be an impeachable offense, but it's not the most attractive activity, nor is twisting the language to attempt to deny it. However, most people are either neutral about Obama or respect him very much. I think when the Republicans attempt to impeach him, they will finally reach their bridge too far.

72. The question here is "What will shake Obama out of this bullshit pattern of behavior?"
I don't know what the answer is.

Someone once was very, very honest and raw about the Iraq War on DU. They took an unimaginable kind of heat for their statement. The statement went something like this:

Sometimes I feel like nothing is ever going to end this bullshit war. And so sometimes I hope that we do incur high casualties because that seems to be the only thing that's going to make people wake up to how pointless it is. I know that's wrong and I don't want anyone to die but sometimes this is what I think is the only way to wake people up.

And I could attempt to rebut your statement by either jumping on you like they did that poster, or by siding with you and thinking that's the only thing that's going to wake him up- an actual impeachment proceeding.

But neither of those sentiments would be genuine. The point here is we really don't know why the President is making the moves that he is. We don't know what his real goals are. They would certainly appear to be strongly at odds with ours.

I think the best thing we can do is start applying the same sort of pressure to Obama that the Republicans have been applying. If he responds to them, he'll likely respond to us using the same tactics.

Although I understand the sentiment behind hoping it gets worse to teach him a lesson, don't count that he'll learn that lesson.

He is doing it for the country, to recognize people in all walks of life who have made a difference. The President isn't a small minded individual.

Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett is an American investor, industrialist, and philanthropist. He is one of the most successful investors in the world. Often called the “legendary investor Warren Buffett,” he is the primary shareholder, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Mr. Buffett has pledged that all of his shares in Berkshire Hathaway – about 99 percent of his net worth – will be given to philanthropic endeavors. He is a co-founder of The Giving Pledge, an organization that encourages wealthy Americans to devote at least 50 percent of their net worth to philanthropy.

68. Here's what it says:
President George H. W. Bush

George Herbert Walker Bush was the 41st President of the United States. Prior to that, he was Vice President in the Reagan Administration, Director of Central Intelligence, Chief of the U.S. Liaison’s Office to the People’s Republic of China, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and a Member of the House of Representatives from the 7th District of Texas. He served in the Navy during World War II. President Bush and President Clinton worked together to encourage aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

Somehow they leave out all the corrupt and sleazy things he did as head of the CIA.

One would think that someone would want to avoid the embarrassment and shame of actually WANTING to back up a defense of GHWB.

This should be FASCINATING.

58. Totally Obama discretion to award a war criminal this honor - disgusting
George Bush, admitted war criminal and torturer, will receive this honor which is totally at the discretion of Obama. If true, then Obama deserves never to be elected again. This is not something he can claim he was forced to do by the repukes, there is no cover story for this other than Obama has no regard for what is right, just and legal.

Absolutely and completely disgusting.

88. HOPE. CHANGE. Remember the Populist Progressive LIE we were sold in 2008?
I suspect this is why many are disillusioned with Obama. He ran on a platform that suggested that he would be transformational and FDResque, but many (me included) feel robbed of this vision. The 2008 election populist progressive rhetoric was a LIE. Giving "Poppy" Bush a medal is just another nail in the coffin of Obama's shadow of his 2008 election self.

If anyone can come up with a better explanation for his behavior so far, I'd love to hear it.

The problem is, somewhere between hopping from the lily pad of the Left to the lily pad of the Center, he fell in the muck and now both sides are suspicious of his motives.

I'm not arguing that he's a centrist at heart; only that the 2008 populist message is in discordance with his true self and now that discrepancy has come to bite them on the electorial ass.

much about either of them or their history. I guess it's possible that he never was that interested in the Bush family growing up and maybe didn't know anything more about Buffett than when he got handed the financial crisis on a dirty platter to fix and Warren showed up. Maybe he relies on other people to recommend to him those he should award or put into positions power. That's kind of scary in a way. That he leaves it to others to make choices and that his own Party doesn't steer him in a better direction.

It's hard to know what to make of this.

(BTW: Buffet's "Bershire Hathaway" was heavily involved in companies that got the Bailouts.)

– Wed Nov 17, 3:22 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama will name billionaire Warren Buffett one of fifteen winners of the 2010 Medal of Freedom, a White House official said on Wednesday.

Buffett, one of the world's most successful investors who has donated a vast chunk of his fortune to charity, will receive the medal at a White House ceremony early next year. The award is the highest U.S. civilian honor.

Chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Inc, Buffett unexpectedly announced in 2006 that he would give away the bulk of his fortune, worth about $40 billion, mostly to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Buffett is one of Obama's closest defenders in the business community and the president has sought his counsel dating back to the 2008 presidential campaign and since.

In a letter published on Wednesday by the New York Times, Buffett praised Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, former President George W. Bush and other government officials for leading efforts to bail out the economy during the financial crisis two years ago.

He said the government's decision to buy up assets many investors considered to be toxic had helped pull back the economy from the brink of collapse.

Buffett said that all corporate America's dominoes were lined up and were ready to topple in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in September 2008.

Revolting.

And will this garner Republican or even independent support or praise? HELL NO! Because they hate this President, they will always hate this President, and clearly this President would rather spend his time begging for the support of morons than to embrace those who got him to where he is.

"President Obama said, “These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they’ve excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place. I look forward to awarding them this honor.”

The following individuals will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom:

President George H. W. Bush
George Herbert Walker Bush was the 41st President of the United States. Prior to that, he was Vice President in the Reagan Administration, Director of Central Intelligence, Chief of the U.S. Liaison’s Office to the People’s Republic of China, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and a Member of the House of Representatives from the 7th District of Texas. He served in the Navy during World War II. President Bush and President Clinton worked together to encourage aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/11/17/president-obama-names-presidential-medal-freedom-recipients

He mentions Bill Clinton, who has worked tirelessly throughout the globe with his foundation, and he gives the award to Poppy Bush????? Just as undeserved as the Nobel Peace Prize that Obama received weeks after being inaugurated.

I give up...........

Obama never meant the things he said during the campaign. Someone who could decide to give an award like this to George Bush was never on our side to begin with. People on this site need to open their fucking eyes, he is selling us out and destroying the democratic brand. Seriously, Obama is supposed to be a "democratic" president, awarding republican pieces of shit who empirically committed war crimes is fucking sick and an embarrassment to every democrat in this country. Can you imagine George W. Bush giving Jimmy Carter this award, the republicans would lose their shit, but Obama gives one to Bush and democrats are just expected to shut up and take it.

Obama might as well be giving a speech where he tells his base that we need to be more demoralized and need to be less active in the political process.

Were we SUCKERED? were the KENNEDY'S SUCKERED? How could any of us have been SOoooo SUCKERED?

Or, was this just something that HAD TO BE so that we could FINALLY RENEW DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA?

You have to be a "bit spiritual" to understand what I'm saying.

But, Pump it Up and then CRASH IT DOWN...and REBUILD AND NEW AND BETTER SYSTEM?

OR....ANARCHY/FASCISM RULE...for a TIME...Until a NEW GROUP COMES IN?

It's been the way of HISTORY. I'm very sorry to live in "Interesting TIMES." I didn't think I signed up for this stuff when I was born! I was so WRONG.. :-( SO WRONG.. One isn't ALLOWED TO CHOSE ONE'S DESTINY... One is CHOSEN.... It's a terrible responsibility...it is heartbreaking.

234. Teddy did it on purpose.
He not only endorsed Obama and criticized Bill while doing it, but he also announced it on the morning of Bush's last State of the Union. He had full knowledge that it is the one day when the entire Congress convenes and when millions of people are watching it on TV. He wanted to further twist the knife and humiliate Hillary, but she wore bright red and held her head high. Biden was great to her that night, he sat next to her and made her laugh. So, may Teddy rest in peace, but he too can go screw himself.

246. Your bitterness is silly.
Politicians fight & squabble & maneuver around each other all the time. Kennedy & Clinton respected each other as allies & adversaries in the game. Hanging onto grudges isn't the right way to play it... and that's why Clinton is happily & successfully staying on as an indispensable player in the Obama administration. When the game is over, they're still there to serve the country.

My gripe is with Obama being too conciliatory. But I don't want him or her being so competitive & contentious that they can't get over past competitions. That would help the Republicans even more than trying to compromise with those closet royalists.

Ironic, considering that the one star in Obama's administration proved to be Hillary. Ask around, what she has done at State and the level of respect that most world leaders have for her knowledge of the issues. Hillary not being president is our loss far more than hers.

Now, it's Cholera...but I don't see photos of them down there walking amongst the throngs of homeless, suffering and sick.

I don't see that those people even have enough tents to cover themselves for months now. And, what about that effort to give them the "shipping crates" that we no longer need to ship goods from China to here now that the "deleveraging" in our American Economy is going on.

There was much news about us giving the Haitians the "shipping crates" to turn into shelter awhile back.

257. I honestly don't care.
Edited on Fri Nov-19-10 10:40 AM by Renew Deal
It's become a tradition. Every president from JFK to Reagan has gotten it except Nixon. It didn't make sense for Clinton to give it to Bush 1. It would have been inappropriate for Bush 2 to do it. Bush 1 is an old man now. It's better to give it to him while he's alive. I also think it's part of a plan for Obama to give it to Clinton. Obama has to take care of Bush first.

I just wonder if a president will be willing to give it to Bush 2. I'm sure some republican will do it some day.

Without him, none of us would be on this site.

Besides, he gave us the gift that kept on giving, in Junior.

I guess that's something to be thankful for.

If you can't recognize this as, AT BEST, a mistake by Obama then you have proven that no matter what happens, you will never find fault with him.

$6.2 Billion USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77)

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy.<1> She is named for the 41st President of the United States George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. Bush's callsign is Avenger, after the TBM Avenger aircraft flown by then-Lieutenant George Bush in WWII. Construction began in 2001 by the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard, at a cost of $6.2 billion<2> and was completed in 2009. She is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

Contracts for ships to toothbrushes for the military, that’s how you get $500 Million in donations for a library. I have been looking for years to find out how much the old man is worth but no luck. The inheritance tax cuts was worth billions for the Wal-Mart family, I wonder how much JR. will get?

About the larger political picture. So believe me, I hear you.

It's just too difficult to realize what this nation is going to face, on account of so many people electing a poltician when we needed a truly great statesman.

315. Hi true.
Thanks for that.
I come in, but the problem is, generally the first post I read makes me so ill that I log out again.
I'm not believing the mess we are in and do realize that it will get worse. Much worse.
Not really sure that this train going over the cliff can be stopped.
I do know that Obama had a historical opportunity to help the working class and poor.
He chose not to...but instead attempted to be "bipartisan".
I will reiterate what I have said from the beginning.
Obama would have made a FABULOUS Indy candidate. He would have won as an Indy.
As a Democrat, he has compromised our entire platform of social responsibility and shifted the entire party to republican-lite.
I'm not liking that. At all.
Toast backatcha.

308. People are really surprised by this? They all cover up for each other...
Obama has already professed his great admiration for Reagan, remember? They're all friends, people. Just look how the Clintons and the Bushes always get cozy. Ford pardoned Nixon; Clinton refused to investigate Reagan and Papa Bush; Obama won't investigate Bush Junior. You've seen that hug between Bush and Obama before W. left with is helicopter on Inauguration Day? That's not politeness. They're all part of the same circle. They cover each other up. They are not interested in doing good; they're all in it for the power.
