The slow-motion resignation of Gordon Campbell has forced the backroom battles of the B.C. Liberals into the open, with a dissident cabinet minister getting the boot and then denouncing the Premier as an angry bully – and Mr. Campbell backtracking on a three-week-old tax cut promise.

Former party chair Scott Nelson, commenting on the tumultuous day in B.C. politics, said the Liberals are disintegrating.

“The party is literally self-destructing in front of the public,” the former Williams Lake mayor said. “The very fabric of the party is starting to fray.”

... The cabinet began a morning meeting in Vancouver by firing Energy Minister Bill Bennett for suggesting Mr. Campbell needs to make way for an interim leader.

... Meanwhile, the freshly fired Mr. Bennett – his cellphone and cabinet credit card cancelled before he could hop on a flight to Victoria – arrived in the capital for an extraordinary 35-minute gathering in which he described what it was like to serve under Mr. Campbell for the past decade.

“He’s not a nice man,” Mr. Bennett said.
