Meg Whitman's former maid gets $5,500 in back wages
Ending an ordeal that may have doomed her race for governor, Meg Whitman on Wednesday agreed to pay her former maid back wages of $5,500, an amount dwarfed by the political fallout created when the illegal-immigrant housekeeper came out of the shadows to accuse the billionaire of cheating her.

The settlement emerged after lawyers haggled for nearly three hours at the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement in downtown San Jose. Both parties met afterward with news reporters on the sidewalk, issuing completely opposite readings of the entire affair.

"We do our best for our employers and in return all we ask is to be treated with respect and to be paid for all the work we do," said Nicandra Diaz Santillan, Whitman's former maid. She cleaned Whitman's house in Atherton for nine years before the Republican candidate let her go near the beginning of her campaign. "We do all this because we need to support our families and to give our children a better future."

9. guilt can be only reason for paying up
if not an admittance of guilt, than what else could it be? meg has already shown that she doesn't mind spending her own money for a cause. and for maintaining her reputation, she didn't seem to concerned with it when she put here hat into the gubernatorial race. obviously she was advised by her legal council to pay the back wages lest she risk what? maybe she was too tired to blow more money on a costly and losing battle.

10. I wonder if anyone from ICE has interviewed her yet
After all, she readily admitted to several crimes on camera, in the presence of her legal counsel, clearly without being coerced. You'd think they might want to at least ask her a few questions and see if any laws were broken.

12. Wow just think if she had paid those wages BEFORE her decision to run for Governor
I mean, I seriously think Whitman had a chance to win governor with all the money she dumped into that election.

But I do truly believe the turning point was the whole issue with the maid. And because Whitman was too cheap to pay the maid properly or perhaps help her get her green card - Whitman ended up losing $150million of her own money only to be routed by Jerry Brown.
