We must look into the colons of air travelers, but not into derivatives
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 07:45 PM by jpgray
We must grasp your genitals if you're flying on a plane, but we must never touch your books after buying up your toxic securities. There can be no trust in what lies beneath underwear, but there can be -only- trust in what lies beneath Goldman Sachs. The cohort of shoe and underwear bombers is dodging missile-slinging drones, while the cohort of investment banks occupies the heights of the executive branch.

We are good at managing risk. We always make consistent trades of liberty for security. :patriot:

1. let's take it further
repukes have vowed intense and non-stop hearings against Obama, the very guy who refused to hold THEM accountable for TRASHING America. Anything after that looks like business as usual.

8. Yes, let us 'profile' these terrorists...
I would imagine them to present themselves like this-

The Financial Terrorists Who Destroyed Our Economy Will Pay Zero in Taxes -- and Get $33 Billion in Refunds
You and I are working our asses off, paying 30% of our limited income in taxes. Not the banks that triggered the financial crisis.

Journalist David DeGraw has put together a devastating report detailing how Wall Street continues to pillage the economy with the government's help. "The staggering level of theft continues unabated," writes DeGraw. "Our future is going up in flames and our government isn’t even making the slightest effort to put out the fire. In fact, they are purposely pouring gasoline all over it." DeGraw's investigation is a follow up to his previous report The Economic Elite Vs. The People of the United States of America -- check that one out to get caught up. AlterNet will run in a series of articles based on DeGraw's investigation. Here is part one.

he first thing people need to understand is that the economic crash wasn’t a crash for the people who caused it. In fact, these financial terrorists are now doing better than ever. In a recent report, titled “Social Inequality in America: Widening Income Disparities,” more evidence of the unprecedented transfer of wealth was revealed:

“As of late 2009, the number of billionaires soared from 793 to 1,011, and their total fortunes from $2.4 trillion to $3.6 trillion…. Despite the crisis, the list of billionaires has grown by 218 people and their aggregate capital has expanded by 50%. This may seem paradoxical, but only at first glance. This result was predictable, if we recall how governments all over the world have dealt with the economic crisis.”

12. Our govt can bully around little people, not so much BP or GS.
Funny how that works ain't it? We can get our asses thrown in prison for telling The Man to lay of our 'junk', but powerful corporations get to sell junk and tell The Man to Fuck Off and be sharp about it!

21. Um, no. Many people can't deal with losing money.
Have you ever even been close to homeless or foodless? It happens to thousands of people every day. How many people have died from bombs in airplanes today? How about this month. This year?

I doubt many of those people think sending millions and millions of dollars checking boobs and balls for bombs is money well spent.

22. Nothing I post on here is brilliant
The point is that your internal geography can be mapped by a functionary if you want to fly somewhere, while the securities of an investment bank that may destroy the economy remain terra incognita. Both bombs and toxic debt can do catastrophic damage, admittedly of different kinds. Where trade-offs of privacy for security are made, even to extremes, and where they are not made much, if at all, is worth noticing. The irony is that there is no certainty that someone at this moment is trying to smuggle a bomb on a plane. There is certainty that someone at this moment is trying to sell an over-leveraged mess of debt-based securities to someone.

I don't encourage you to put a dollar value on the lives that would be lost in a terrorist attack, but rather I ask you take a look at two different catastrophic risks, and see how they are addressed by our leaders.

16. And don't look at the mass deaths in hospitals from poor care.
Every few weeks, thousands die in American hospitals due to infections they got while in the hospitals.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Prescription drugs are the big killer substances, but they are essential to American commerce.

Our government strains at the gnats and swallows the camels.
