1. If you don't have it paid off in 25 years...

then you can be forgiven of your debt. They also have a program where you can apply to make payments based on your income.

On edit - the above is the latest that I'm aware of. I'm sorry - I hadn't realized anything further was passed on this with HCR.

5. I had read something last summer on the HCR...it was 10 years
of required payments on Stafford Loans while working for a nonprofit would have balance forgiven.

Most student loans are set up for 10 year payback, so presumably the above was for people who'd had deferments throughout they payback time so had debt piling up.

2. I don't know what was in HCR, but proof of disability is a cause of discharge

3. I know someone who just got her mom a 'hardship' exemption

Call your Senator and find out the details of this. They can wipe all the debt away. This person was being denied SS benefits. They also suggested bankruptcy, but I don't think that's necessary to wipe out the debt. Look for a 'hardship' exemption.

here's a link:

Loan Forgiveness Based on Economic Hardship

In rare situations a bankruptcy court may rule that your financial situation is dire enough to expunge your outstanding student loans, including federal student loans and private loans. The fact is your student loans are an obligation regardless of bankruptcy, which makes this such an unusual occurrence . . .

4. generally it involves work in nonprofits, or regions where it's hard to recruit
http://www.finaid.org/loans/forgiveness.phtml
The US Department of Health and Human Services offers loan forgiveness programs through the National Health Service Corps and the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program. These programs offer loan forgiveness to physicians and registered nurses who agree to practice for a set number of years in areas that lack adequate medical care (including remote and/or economically depressed regions).

The US National Institutes of Health's NIH Loan Repayment Programs repays up to $35,000/year of student loan debt for US citizens who are conducting clinical medical research.

Here's a list of programs by state

Here's an article
