Muslims Harassed During Prayer Festival in Greece

ATHENS, Greece (Nov. 16) -- Ultra-right activists waved Greek flags and pelted Muslims with raw eggs as they gathered today in central Athens to pray during the Eid al-Adha festival.

Seven other public prayers, including a gathering before the sprawling courtyard of the country's main university, took place without incident. But at Attiki Square, wedged within the sprawl of concrete apartment units in the heart of Athens, violent incidents marked the latest streak of anti-Islam sentiment in the country.

Demonstrators circled the square and hostile locals blared music from nearby apartments, taunting unwanted immigrants -- mainly from strife-torn Muslim countries -- as they gathered to pray early today. Leaflets depicting Muslims as pigs were scattered across the concrete grounds.

3.  Chryssi Avghi (Golden Dawn) are explicitly neo-Nazi - not specifically Christian
They are a very nasty bunch of people in any case.

5. Really?
if christians were attacked in a muslim country, would you care about what group the attackers belong to? or would you just call them muslims?

11. I would certainly care what group they belonged to in that case!
Of course I wouldn't 'just call them Muslims', what do you think?

To clarify matters: I am not a Christian, but a devout atheist, with serious concerns about Christian extremism. But I am also extremely worried about the rise of neo-Nazi groups in Europe. It's a problem to varying degrees throughout the region.

8. I can stand opposing views.
But I don't see anywhere in that article where Christians are mentioned.

9. No, LBN has specific rules, as cited above. "Muslims Harassed During Prayer Festival in Greece"
...is the title of the article you posted.

There are 2 forums you aren't able to make up your own titles. This is one, and the Israel/Palestine one is the other.

12. "xenophobia -- a term coined by the ancient Greeks"
The irony has left me speechless.

Does anyone know the historical context which led to the ancient Greeks coming up with this word?

14. Apparently it is based on ancient Greek words, but was first used in 1903
However, the ancient Greeks did show xenophobia, as shown by the word 'barbarian', originally coined by the ancient Greeks as a disparaging word for foreigners who spoke their own supposedly inferior languages rather than Greek. To the Greeks, foreign languages sounded like 'bar-bar'.

15. So, it wasn't a term coined by the ancient Greeks then?
I hardly see AOL articles these days but they still seem to like making up their own facts.

BTW What happened in 1903?

Thanks for the interesting background behind 'barbarian'.

17. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary that's when it was first used.
Don't know the background. Of course there *was* plenty of xenophobia in many places then, leading up to WW1. And a lot of immigrant-bashing, in both the UK and USA, then and now.
