"There's the sign post up ahead: your next stop---the Twilight Zone!"
That must be where we're at, right?

There is just no other explanation for the cognitive dissonance and just utter nonsense that pervades our every waking hour these past few years. In no particular order, consider the following:

George W. Bush installed as President of the United States by a 5-4 vote of the Supreme Court after the recount was stopped in Florida. One of the five in the majority was Sandra Day O'Connor who had repeatedly expressed her fervent hope that Bush would win so she could retire under a Republican president.

After four crews of terrorists, mostly Saudis, hijacked airliners and crashed them into US landmark targets, killing over 3,000,--- we invaded Iraq. Number of Iraqi terrorists involve in 9-11? ZERO.

Weapons of Mass Destruction? NONE EVER FOUND---EVER---ANYWHERE---NOT ONE!

Bush launched an unnecessary and unprovoked war, authorized torture, imprisoned US citizens for years without even charging them with an offense, read our mail and searched our homes without a warrant, and condoned branding anyone who opposed him as an "Osama lover" and---we re-elected him in 2004.

Sarah Palin, GOP vice presidential candidate in 2008, demonstrated early and often that she lacked the intelligence, experience and integrity to govern a small town. She has since quit her job as governor of Alaska in mid-term to make lots of money inflaming the ugliest prejudices and encouraging the basest instincts of the most reptilian segment of our society. Although no one with a conscience or an IQ above room temperature believes she is anything other than a rather disgusting clown, she is currently a favorite for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Without one iota of corroboration or supporting evidence, the thinly-veiled racists calling themselves "Tea Party Patriots" (or whatever the hell they have chosen as their identity this week) are STILL insisting that President Obama is not a US citizen, was born in Kenya, was educated in a madrassa, is a muslim and hates white people(like his mother).

There is much more evidence that we currently reside in one of those quaint little cul de sacs Rod Serling described for us---and warned us about---but more examples are unnecessary. Where we are is not the issue.

Does this end in half an hour or do we have to DO something?

2. Back in the real world, this is what happens in Empires in Decline
Next I suspect will be the end of the American Empire and it will not be pretty... and it WILL feel like the twilight zone on steroids.

4. the "lucky" version will be if we can break into different countries when landing
...from our great fall.

and hopefully, some of *those* may be more humane than the increasingly bizarre/heartless empire which preceded them...

5. We are, in my opinion, moving in that direction
the question will be if this will be a peaceful breakup, or a hot and sharp and short civil war first.

And some of the successor states will NOT be places I want to even enter. Let's just say I can easily envision the Republic of New Jerusalem... and definitely not a place I want to be at.

6. No, some of the successors will not be nice places at all.
The coastal republics had better consider defending their borders against those Tea Baggin' illegals!

9. Same region and yes
for the same reasons you are thinking most likely. I don't claim to read minds, but anybody who is aware of the five major cultures in this country could very well draw the potential borders quite close to reality when it finally happens.

10. you mean, we might not be able to keep the current blood-drenching that props us up...
...outside our borders, when we fall?

I'm hoping for something more like a Soviet-style break-up when it comes... though of course, they wound up with the same mob boss economy that... well, that we already have!

11. No, I mean a geometric progression in he quantity of blood. Some people look forward to this and
I'd bet, of those hoping for it, you, being on the blood-less wish list, are a distinct minority, so you're not going to get your wish.

12. What we wish for, and what is likely to happen in the next 10- 50 years is increasingly
...divergent, alas.

But once the gasoline runs out and the HD TVs go dark, what happens next is kind of up for grabs.

15. Four to six states in the Continent
yes... that professor is not crazy eiher... and a brit recently published an article in Foreign Affairs about the coming fall of Empire...

Most people who are paying attention (and that is very few) are aware of this process. It is following a very predictable path.

13. I think Bill Maher said it best, although he was
only talking about Glen Beck. I believe that we are surrounded by people and many in power who are close to playing with their own poo.
