1. There's exceptions on both sides though.

Modern Family is hysterical, and it's #3 on the GOP list.

Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami is a foul, soulless marketing creation that besmirches my adopted hometown, and it's #4 on the Dem. list.

On edit: Also, why isn't The Good Wife tied for #6 on the GOP list?

2. The phenomenon of 'reality shows' always mystified me
I do believe there is an intelligence factor involved.

4. and away we go
"Divide and conquer! Throughout the annals of time, plutocrats have prayed for this sort of tribal loathing. The one percent can thoroughly rule the 99—if the 99 percent agree to split into tribes and loathe each other. Does it make political sense to engage in such loathing?"

7. Some of it really is scripted.
I know a guy who's sister was on MTV's Real World.

According to him, they coached cast members encouraging them to drink like alcoholics, use drugs, get into fights, and be as promiscuous as possible because it made viewers more interested in the show.

8. Yeee-up... heard the same from someone I know
you can tell sometimes when it is scripted... reactions almost seem lifeless and fake, because they are. What bothers me mostly about these shows is how people have been coached to interact with eachother. People trying to one up on the person next to them for what???? It's sad...

6. Wow the only show on either survey list
I have ever watched is Law and Order: SVU, and I only started watching it when I was laid out with an infection, and a marathon was running.

It seems anytime I start getting interested in a show, it gets cancelled. Last year I started watching reruns of Cold Case, and it promptly gets the axe.

I do like Pawn Stars in small doses. I used to watch the regular Law and Order but probably no more than a few episodes since Angie Harmon left.

Starting to watch Walking Dead. First two episodes were great. Can't say much for the third one. It is about the flesh eaters not the soap opera around it. Probably check out after next week.

Life is too short to watch television. Now I got to get back to reading Chernow's "Washington" which is great. Highly recommend. Beats what is on television.

12. Your list is the same as mine.
I was a bit surprised they put Modern Family in the R column.

13. Re: Modern Family in the Republican column
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 11:26 AM by MattyGroves
One could be cynical and attribute the popularity to men watching for the assets of the two actresses who play the wives on the show.

More likely though the show presents three relatively "functional" households (no total idiot parents and smartassed kids) while sticking to situations where most people can say "yeah, I can relate" or "yeah, I've been there with my family".

The writers have said that a lot of the material comes from personal experiences with their families so perhaps it's just one of those shows that appeals across the board.

11. I probably watch only a couple hours of TV a week now
I work second shift so I miss out on the vacuous junk that comprises most of American television these days.

I am glad that someone made a study about repubs vs Democrats favorite shows. It shows some interesting insight into how a certain type of person's mind works.

16. Strange list
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 11:56 AM by ProudToBeBlueInRhody
You'd think RW'ers would like the concept of Mad Men, with all the sexism and smoking. Yet apparently they don't really watch it at all.

I can't believe the reality shows, though.....I watch some of the ones with people working real jobs like Deadliest Catch on occasion, but I don't know why anyone wants to watch rich, bored D-list celebrities act like morons. Those Housewives of Atlanta or Beverly Hills shows are vile.
