I have my worst DJ gig ever this Saturday
Not worst as in it will be a bad time or a bad crowd or I'll have to play shitty music (all of which may come to pass lol) but it's the underlying theme behind the whole affair. The situation is that the wedding of my wife's niece and her long time partner, an african american male and the have raised twins together for many years but never felt the need to get married. Believe me when I say they suffered their share of bigotry over the relationship but have admirably endured.

Anyhoo, he was active reserve military and has been reactivated and is being deployed to Afghanistan soon so he decided he wanted to marry her finally basically so she'll be taken care of if anything happens to him. He is quite frightened about the deployment understandably enough.

How the fuck do I manage to be a happy DJ with my views on this horror. I'd just as soon club the guy and smuggle him over the border to canada against his will for the sake of my Niece-in-law. I'm scared to death of what to play. I'm partial to classic rock and a lot of people are. What if someone requests Fortunate Son or Mosh by Eminem or something lol. Thoughts?

2. Good plan
and he'll probably be pretty drunk so it won't hurt as bad. I'm even willing to take nude pictures with the guy if it would help lol. This shit has to end. This is why I can't drive on post anymore. I'm at the point of offering every soldier a free ride to the border and I'm pretty sure someone will shoot me for that.

you out for being gay these days.

don't bother getting him stoned.

you can still get high and be in the army.

he will have to be physically incapacitated. (unfortunately)

3. Sounds like a lot of fun!
Dude, one of the best gigs I ever had was playing for a wedding party of friends (I was paid in wine, food, and Cuban cigars :9). Enjoy yourself! If you don't, it will translate to your performance... think of what that party means to them, especially in light of the circumstances.

Jus' my 2¢. ;)

9. IMHO??
Give 100% as a fabulous DJ playing their music of choice -- and really sell it so everyone has a great time. Leave Afghanistan out of it unless they bring it up. A wedding should be a celebration -- give them that. :) Just my VERY humble opinion.

My uncle is a wedding planner and recently had the wedding from hell. This couple had lived together for 22 years and raised 4 kids. The guy was dying of cancer and decided he wanted his partner to be an "honest woman" so to speak before he died and give her the dream wedding she was willing to do without all those years. Uncle made sure everyone partied like there was no tomorrow. The guy died less than a month later. That family told my uncle they were so pleased the "husband" had a few weeks of doing something that had absolutely nothing to do with cancer and everything to do with life, love and happiness.

13. If someone requests Fortunate Son or Mosh ...
... these songs mean surprisingly different things to different people.
Hendrix' "Star Spangled Banner" opened the 1996 RNC convention in San Diego.
Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" was the theme of Poppy Bush's election campaign.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_Worry,_Be_Happy
At the 1989 Grammy Awards, "Don't Worry Be Happy" won 'Best Song of the Year'. The song's title is taken from a famous quote by Meher Baba
The song was used in George H. W. Bush's campaign in the 1988 U.S. presidential election until McFerrin objected, and the campaign desisted.

History

1966 Don't Worry Be Happy inspiration card

Meher Baba (1894-1969) often used the expression "Don't worry, be happy" when cabling his followers in the west. Later, in the 1960's, this well used expression by Baba was printed up on inspiration cards and even day-glo posters of the era. In 1988, Bobby McFerrin noticed a similar poster in the apartment of the jazz band Tuck & Patti in San Francisco. Inspired by the expression's charm and simplicity, McFerrin wrote the now famous song.

Meher Baba did not mean to convey by this expression that one should avoid facing and solving problems, the sentiment that led to the satirical iconic image of a smiley face with a bullet through its head. He was scrupulous about tending to personal duties and facing reality head on. This is evidenced by the fact that his words were often, "Do your best, then don't worry, be happy." <2>

14. I think the line in "Mosh"
"Fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home" might not go over well.
