And went on to say that this stance was not up for discussion and was his final decision.

So there is room for compromise on the other tax cuts but this part was non-negotiable. I think the left would rally around the president big time and he would be seen as a strong leader by independent voters too. People like to see strength, not weakness or being wishy-washy.

4. I'd rally around that..as soon as I recovered from the shock of hearing him say it.
Alas, I fear that my nervous system is in no danger.

5. then the tax cuts for all woudl expire and Obama would lose
on the issue of raising taxes. The GOP would hammer him over the issue which would confoundedly confusing to most. he would be made out to look like a flip flopper as well as a "tax and spend" liberal.

7. He would have done the one thing that could have the biggest effect on deficit reduction.
Edited on Fri Nov-12-10 03:47 PM by county worker
Obama lets all tax cuts expire, then he announces that there is no longer any reason to include entitlements in the deficit reduction debate since 7 billion of the deficit is taken care of with the end of the Bush tax cuts. Then he cuts military spending and stimulates the economy with a jobs bill.

Now there is a winning combination.

13. Something nobody seems to want to accept. Obama will be hammered by the right no matter what he doe...
Edited on Fri Nov-12-10 04:07 PM by county worker
It's a great thing that we measure what our outcomes should be by the amount of hammering the right will do.

Don't you think it's about time we do what's right for people and let the right hammer away. Fox News, Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, et. al. hammer Obama daily.

14. It's not the hammering that's the concern--it's whether or not the accusations against him
are accepted as true by voters. They seem right now to believe he raised their taxes, and he cut them for most people. Obama's administration is probably very aware that the truth seems to mean little--but that's their problem to overcome.

You spoke volumes there and I don't know why they don't fight as hard as they did before the 2008 election. They had a web site why you could post the lies the right put out. I haven't checked lately on it.

18. the only hammering that ever matters is the kind that gets traction
and the tax and spend label always does.

Obama's MO is to have a solution that results from compromise. It is not so much the out come that matters, but that the outcome is a result of compromise.

I begin to think there will never be a unilateral Dem designed outcome.

how the spin will be spun--could end up a disaster in 2012.

12. I think all Dems should mirror Pelosi on this issue.
(snip)

On another critical issue the House must tend to and soon, the extension of the Bush tax cuts, Pelosi sounded like she was not in a mood to compromise:

"Well, our position in the House has been we support the tax cuts for the middle — for everyone, but not an additional tax cut at the high end.

It’s too costly. It’s $700 billion. One year would be around $70 billion. That’s a lot of money to give a tax cut at the high end. And I remind you that those tax cuts have been in effect for a very long time, they did not create jobs."
