1976 Apple I to Sell For Over $200,000
1:00 PM - November 12, 2010 by Tuan Mai

Working out of his parent's garage, Steve Jobs introduced to the world in 1976, the Apple-1 computer that would evolve into a legacy and corporate giant. Now collectors and apple "fanboys" have a chance to own a piece of the legacy by bidding on one of the original 200 wood-encased Apple-1 computers, built personally by a very young Jobs and Wozniak. This rare and unique collectible is going on auction at Christie's on November 23.

One of the 200 original wood-encased Apple-1 computers, built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in their garage in 1976, is going up for auction at Christie’s in London on November 23. Originally sold for an eerie $666.66, the Apple-1 is expected to sell for over $200,000, proving that it really can pay off to let ancient pieces of junk collect dust in your attic.

The winner of the auction will be receiving an Apple-1 motherboard, 8K bytes of RAM, and a couple capacitors, connectors and interfaces. The original shipping box and several other goodies, such as a typed letter from Steve Jobs to the original owner all pictured here:

4. We had a TRS-80 which used cassettes. Still use the cassette
player. Still have the computer too but doubt it is worth much.

5. Wonder how much an Apple II or Mac I is worth
I've got both of those collecting dust in my attic. I remember reading somewhere at the turn of the century that old computers were going to become the next hot collectible item. I could make a small fortune if that comes about.

6. I'm sure it's worth every penny since I wouldn't have to buy
all that anti-virus stuff to protect it.

7. Anybody remember the Sinclair ZX-80?
I had one and wrote programs for it. A cool toy, but absolutely useless for any practical purpose I was ever able to come up with.

14. Do you mean 80s, not 60s? I remember building a C64 modem on a little breadboard,
using components from Radio Shack and plans from a magazine. Those were the days.

16. I think that was the ZX-81, the upgraded version.
They sold it as a kit for $99.

As for the ZX-80, ou had to supply your own tape drive, and there was no printer port. I took screen shots with a cheap Polaroid as an alternative to printing.

18. Jobs ans Woz were at the 1976 or 77 Dayton Oh Hamfest
I remember talking to them for a few minutes. They both looked a bit shaggy with long hair, and maybe both had beards. They had their Apple I computer with no case as in the photo. They were just at a table with a white sheet draped over it. I think the apple logo was hand done back then. We Amateur radio nerds were the early adopters for the first microcomputers.

I think the original wood cases were actually made by another company, not Apple directly.

Guess I should have volunteered to work the booth for stock.....

My first computer was a "Cosmac Elf" which I still have. My first real computer was a TRS-80 model I I bought in late 77.

19. I'm saving my TI-99/4A just to see if it might be worth something.

Who knows? It's not worth much now but maybe later. I have the original box, several cartridges and manuals.

20. My Mom has one that has never been OUT of the box - it should be worth something
Though an original Apple would definitely be worth more than a TI-99 any day.
