Acts of kindness, generosity left their mark on WWII veteran
"...How much did the war change him? It's hard to find anyone to ask. No one who knew McGriff well before the war is still alive. He attended his first Army reunion last year and recognized no one.

McGriff has a hard time assessing the war's impact. He knows it affected him greatly: "Your job is to kill other men. What that does to the psyche of a human being is immeasurable."

Yet in his stories, it's the moments of kindness he keeps coming back to. Of the Hispanic saving his life, the German medic saving his friend. A Catholic priest, just robbed, giving food to the thieves."
