Obama Didn't Fold--- More Huffington Crap!
According to a recommended diary, President Obama "folded" on tax cuts. He is apparently going to allow tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to be permanently extended. This would be very big news (and contradict what he said in his Weekly Radio Address just a week or two ago). And it would be extremely depressing.

Since this is such big news, I immediately looked for ANY sources other than Huffington Post discussing this shocking development. I found NONE. Not the New York Times. Not CNN. Not even Talking Points Memo. Even a Google News search found ONE internet link on this topic---Huffington Post. Hmm, real interesting. The President makes a major decision on a key issue, and no one except Huffington Post even discusses it. There are two possible reasons for that:

* whamfan's diary :: ::
*

1. Every other newspaper, news network or internet news source chooses to ignore it (which seems unlikely, especially in the internet area of 24-hour news and instant information) or

2. Other news sources view an informal chat with a presidential advisor as NOT being indicative of the Commander-in-Chief's decision.

I don't think I am revealing anything shocking when I say that Huffington Post has an agenda, to promote "progressivism" as they see it by making our President look BAD. They have done it before, and they'll do it again. Spreading rumors to anger his liberal base. The sad thing is, we here at Daily Kos fall for it. The giant headlines must scare us somehow!

I wish my fellow Kossacks would quit falling for this Huffington Post Crap!

3. We started off with extend cuts for those under 250K only

Now we move to extend the cuts for 250k only but extend the rest temporarily. WHY!

Next it will be extend them all permanently!

I'm sick and tired of Obama working with the right! He's a fucking weakling! He's compromising our lives away!

6. Huffington Post is a sensationalist site
I no longer put much stock into it since I saw them do an article that I knew the source who gave it to them as being unreliable. The story was proven false and of course Huffington Post never corrected it, and they have done so on other stories. I can't trust a site that post stories and when debunked never bother to correct it.

9. Be careful
If you look at the journalistic history behind the public option, you'll find a few, very few, outlets that originally were reporting that the PO was dead in about June or July of 2009. The White House denied it at the time, but it came to be. Now, we find out that it was in that time frame that Daschel is suggesting that the White House began to understand that they could get everything else they wanted, if they gave in on that.

When you hear this claim, that they have "folded", it could merely be that they have figured out what they could, and could not, get if they agree to permanent tax cuts. Has the decision been made to do so? Probably not. You'd probably find that the decision to dump the PO wasn't make in July either. From their point of view, that "decision" isn't made until it hits the floor in congress.

Regardless, it is fairly common political strategy, on both sides of the aisle, to box in people on your own side by "leaking" that they have made some compromise so that they are forced to deny it. At that point, it makes it much harder for them EVER to make such a compromise. Think of it as "reverse triangulation". And I think you will find that the HP is a hot bed of people willing to participate in such a strategy.

and is is not what will happen. I am amazed that after we have given away so much, people are willing to "work" with the repubs. Why should they give an inch when our history is that we will give up anything for a promise of bipartisanship when the repubs all vote no anyway?

12. yeah, well many DUers should be forced to live in poor neighborhoods
because there is a huge disconnect here, and I can only assume it is because those who think this is fine, aren't being effected by this at all. Live in neighborhoods where programs have been cut, people without health insurance or a pot to piss in. Those people most of us "little people" have to live with. It eefects all of us, but those of you big mouths who make over 100k a year have no fucking clue. For you, this is just "political", while to us, it's life altering. So what the fuck are you all sacrificing? Your apathy is clear... thank you for your lack of concern now we can ignore you because you don't give a damn.

19. It's not just those who make over $100,000.
It's also the wannabes who don't realize that policies like this are the #1 reason economic mobility remains out of reach for them. Cutting their own throats. And for what?

18. whamfan is a flat fucking LIAR
Why poison DU with this kind of crap. The Kosak being quoted is simply LYING.

There is nothing in the Huffington Post article that says tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to be permanently extended.

I do not doubt that some asshole on the HuffPost made that claim, but whamfan's assertion that the Huff Post said it is a lie, and a knowing lie since he purports to have read the piece.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's top adviser suggested to The Huffington Post late Wednesday that the administration is ready to accept an across-the-board, temporary continuation of steep Bush-era tax cuts, including those for the wealthiest taxpayers.

That appears to be the only way, said David Axelrod, that middle-class taxpayers can keep their tax cuts, given the legislative and political realities facing Obama in the aftermath of last week's electoral defeat.

"We have to deal with the world as we find it," Axelrod said during an unusually candid and reflective 90-minute interview in his office, steps away from the Oval Office. "The world of what it takes to get this done."

"There are concerns," he added, that Congress will continue to kick the can down the road in the future by passing temporary extensions for the wealthy time and time again. "But I don't want to trade away security for the middle class in order to make that point."
