7. 14th armored cav, now a stryker brigade in Iraq or Afghanistan.
It was a tripwire brigade; a few thousand guys with M60 tanks and APCs looking across the border at 60 armored divisions. Our mission was to die first if WWIII happened. I deployed a few weeks after the Cuban missile crisis and tensions were so high that married NCOs were inviting the enlisted men home to dinner.

This was early days in the Fulda gap. Now it's a paint ball game

Border checkpoint, after the East Germans got their mojo working.

Alert. The armor guys loved this shit. I was in air recon so I mostly missed it. Once the aircraft were up we sat around the ops office drinking coffee and swapping lies.

That arrow coming in from the east was pointed right at me.

Our air arm. As you can see, we were loaded for bear. We did forward air recon with these. I occasionally went along as an observer, but I didn't have a lot of confidence in army pilots.

Got to Europe after the fun was over. I wanted to go to Berlin during the Cold War and get one of those dandy Army of Occupation Medals

Bur alas, it wasn't in the cards... I went to Korea instead.
