Spam, pop tarts and canned crabmeat.....yum.
SAN DIEGO – Two tugboats slowly pulled a disabled cruise ship with nearly 4,500 passengers and crew toward San Diego on Wednesday.

The 952-foot Carnival Splendor crept into cell phone range and the onboard phone system started working on a limited basis, allowing passengers mostly cut off from communication since an engine fire Monday to finally reach their loved ones.

Officials said the ship could arrive in San Diego as early as mid-day Thursday.

.....(snip).....

"So really, all we're doing is just kind of hanging out on a boat waiting for the next mealtime," Zambrano said.

Mealtime requires a two-hour wait for cold food. Passengers have been subsisting on Spam, Pop Tarts and canned crabmeat flown in by Navy helicopters. .........(more)

4. For anyone who flies into a rage whenever "profits" are mentioned
THIS is what profits are for...to buy insurance and to self-insure against losses like this. This fire will cost the cruise line dearly, but life will go on because they have cash on their balance sheet to weather the enormous cost.

8. Er, no, buying insurance is a business expense, not profit.
Likewide funding any slef-insurance, which I doubt they do. Big ship, big company, big insurance policy. Used to be Lloyd's of London wrote that sort, not sure who does now.

11. Um...ok...and what do you need to absorb those expenses...uhhhh, yeah: profit
And cash on the balance sheet is often a requirement for insurance underwriters.

16. OK, take the insurance expense out of operating expense
What would you call the result? Duh.

It's semantics, anyway: free cash flow and cash on the balance sheet are age-old requirements for many kinds of business insurance, mainly to deal with moral hazard issues.

23. "It's semantics" = "Please let my wrong usage of language pass"
Besides, one has to wonder about the inclination to turn a completely unrelated thread into a pro-capitalist screed.

More, it's a straw man: only a handful of hard-line Marxists want to abolish profit. What leftists and liberals want is for it to be taxed fairly, i.e. progressively.

Your little jab at the "dirty commies" was completely out of place and wrong. That's what the internet parlance FAIL was invented for.

17. And that's why non-profit organizations can never have any kind of insurance, ever!
Nor reserve funds!

25. Brings up a question, though
I mean, not all vegans can be vegan 100% of the time. I wonder how far off the reservation they stray when they have to stray.

I once saw an avowed vegetarian downing not just a hamburger, but a cheeseburger with bacon. The rationale was, hey, I have no vegetarian options right now, and I need to eat. Might as well go whole hog...

28. I'm a vegan who is reasonable about the survival aspect.
I think it's wholly unethical to unnecessarily kill animals for our food (and my definition of unnecessary is VERY broad, hence the reason I'm vegan), but like the people eating each other after a plane crash, I'm hesitant to judge anyone in a situation like that. Survival instinct is very strong. I doubt most vegans would disagree.

29. I heard someone once say that cruise ships are like a vacation at a minimum-security prison.
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 05:22 PM by superduperfarleft
With small children everywhere in addition to the relatively harmless inmates.

The fact that they even HAD spam aboard is plenty scary enough.

30. The cruise ship didn't have the spam aboard
The sailors of the Reagan (new motto: "We're from the government and we're here to help") were more than happy to send all the spam, hardtack and SOS they could come up with to the beleaguered civilians aboard the disabled cruise ship.
