Golden Girl Betty White Honored As A Forest Ranger At The Kennedy Center

One of White's fellow rangers says this milestone means a lot to him.

"I lost my eye sight in a car accident," says Joe Meade, National Partnership Office Director with the Forest Service.

Meade says it's White's work with the guide dogs that's helped him and his guide dog Brody, work in the Forest Service for 32 years.

"Early in my Forest Service career, it was very much dominated by individuals that were able bodied and pretty much male, and white," he says. "To have her be embraced as a ranger, for me, a person that represents diversity and truly values diversity, and an agency that's really grown to be highly diverse, it's a double-honor."

White says she's going to use her celebrity status to help the Forest Service.

"Let's try to spread the word to each other, one to one, how important it is to save it. Once you pave it over it never comes back."

25. joke
That article left out her joke at the end about the forest ranger hat:

White, who recently won an Emmy for her guest-hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live," is in Washington for a ceremony to honor comedian Tina Fey, who is receiving the nation's top humor prize.

"It's a formal affair," she said. "Would it be all right if I wore the hat?"

Amazing that here is another woman who couldn't follow her chosen career because of discrimination. I wonder if today's kids have any idea of what it was like back then to have doors slammed in your face just because you were female.

she deserves to be an honorable Forrest Ranger also. She looks deeply touched, I wonder if they surprised her with it.
