First they took the manufacturing jobs and I didn't complain
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 06:49 PM by Fresh_Start
because I wasn't in manufacturing and foreign electronics and clothing were cheaper and the cars were more reliable.

Then they took the IT jobs and I didn't complain because I wasn't in IT and companies had more profits so stocks were booming

Then they took the call center jobs and I didn't complain because I wasn't in tele-service and I never need customer service

Then they busted the unions and I didn't complain because I wasn't in a union and why do union workers deserve more than I have.

Then they destroyed family farms by subsidizing corporate farms and I didn't complain because I wasn't a family farmer and don't care about local organic foods.

Then they took the medical technician jobs and I didn't complain because I wasn't in medical technology and I think people have too many medical tests.

Then they reduced my medical coverage and increased the costs, I began to complain but they preached that it was necessary because the company was struggling and did I prefer to be unemployed. No one in my family had a preexisting condition and I COULD afford to pay so I stopped complaining.

Then they took away my pension and promised me the miracle of the stock market, this time I complained louder but they didn't care, corporate profits were more important than employees and besides people in India would do the jobs more cheaply.

Then they allowed corporations to defraud us and destroy the environment and merely have fines as the cost of doing business, but I didn't complain because I personally wasn't defrauded and the environmental damage is not in my backyard.

Now corporate profits are looking fine and there are lots of cheap foreign goods to buy.
But more than 15% of my fellow citizens are un/under employed.
And US businesses are telling my children to move overseas for career opportunities.

I didn't protest, I didn't complain, but at least I'll be able to see my grandbabies on Skype from 5000 miles away.
Those cheap electronics weren't so cheap anymore.

An abject apology to Niermoller
Thank you to DUers for suggestions.
A work in process: don't have the ending right yet but

2. Here's an old one of mine:
First they took the food stamps away from the lazy poor, and I was glad because they told me I would pay lower taxes.

Then they took the homes from the subprime mortgage holders who were in over their heads. I was glad because I had no mortgage.

Then they took people’s jobs so that they lost their livelihoods and their health insurance. I was glad because I would not have to pay for them, and I still had a job and health insurance.

Then they took the benefits from the social security recipients, and I was glad because I was young and hated to see the old people getting something for nothing.

Now I am old and poor and homeless and ill, and I have nothing to eat. But I am glad because I know that I am not a burden on the deserving rich.
