Boy, 4, barred from pre-K for long locks

Renee Szablewski is a good, churchgoing Catholic. She wants her 4-year-old son, Jack, to grow up to be one, too.

That’s why Szablewski was so upset last month with St. Dominic, a parochial school in Brick, N.J. The principal at the school barred Jack from his pre-kindergarten class because his hair was too long.

“That’s Christian? That’s Catholic?” Szablewski fumed during a telephone interview with TODAYshow.com Monday.

Jack’s early lesson in how tough life can be actually began when at the tender age of 16 months, his grandfather died of lung cancer. Renee Szablewski decided to honor her father by letting her son’s hair grow out so that he could donate his locks to be used in wigs for children who lose their own hair to cancer radiation treatment.

1. K&R
This kid could teach a lesson about being Christian to the principal of that ostensibly "Christian" school.

:grr:

4. Maybe we need to revisit that concept.
Maybe ALL schools should be subject to anti-discrimination laws, including private schools.

3. wow that's nuts. and she would be paying to send her kid there.
that's crap. i wouldn't want to send my kid to a school that discriminates on people because of the length of their hair.

8. "Zero Tolerance" policies in schools, especially pre-K
are downright evil. They allow for no empathy, no compassion, no critical thinking. Kids are prepared for an authoritarian society. And Pre-K? This is the time to socialize kids for elementary school, not the time to impose behavioral policies that they are too young to understand.

But the long hair is Mama's issue, not the kid's, and I've got to wonder if she's doing him any favors either.

11. *sigh* It's for a good cause
"Renee Szablewski decided to honor her father by letting her son’s hair grow out so that he could donate his locks to be used in wigs for children who lose their own hair to cancer radiation treatment."

If the mom isn't forcing the kid to do it, and the kid doesn't have problems with it, neither should the school. Especially with this charitable cause being the reason.

They are showing more charity and Christian love than the school. Jesus had quite a bit to say about legalism.

13. I could see barring him from school on the grounds that
he's a Yankees fan.

I really don't care about the hair length, though.

14. Public schools don't discriminate.
I have a student who grows his hair out every year to donate. He's encouraged some classmates to join him. We think it's a great thing.
