Americain wins the Melbourne Cup
Americain has just won the Melbourne Cup, the horse-race described by Mark Twain as "the race that stops a nation." Hope it's a good sign for the future of the USA.

Trained in France, ridden by Gerald Mosse and trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, he's obviously a French-American. He's the most magnificent-looking steed you could ever see, threaded his way through and won with a great finishing burst. The Aussie favourite, So You Think, ran a bit too freely, but you couldn't take anything away from the winner.
