OMG. If this doesn't get out the Dem vote....

GOP senators press DHS to fully fund deportation

Posted: Saturday, October 30, 2010

JAE C. HONG / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 2010
Deporting all the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States would cost about $80 billion, roughly 14 times the current budget for deportations.

WASHINGTON - Signaling another partisan fight over immigration enforcement after next week's midterm elections, all seven Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee signed a letter last week asking the Department of Homeland Security how much money it needs to deport every illegal immigrant the government encounters.

The request came in an Oct. 21 letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and asks her to "detail exactly how much funding" would be needed "to ensure that enforcement of the law occurs consistently for every illegal alien encountered and apprehended."

1. Sounds like Eisenholwer's Operation Wetback in 1954
Deporting all those people would require nothing short of a police state.

3. a rw pundit actually used Germany in the 1940's as a practical example
to illustrate the point he wanted to make that the government *could* force-ably transport that many people in a few years.

2. Since illegals can't vote, I don't see the connection
Immigration is becoming the new third rail in politics. I have many, many, many progressive friends in California, many of whom work for the state, that are as anti-illegal immigrants as any far right tea bagger.

Politicians know that illegals can't vote, that their voices are silenced. Obama should have led on this issue in the past two years and abandoned us.

4. You do understand that 'third rail' refers to something that cannot be
touched for fear of immolation.

Immigration has NEVER been a 'third rail'. It's a rallying point - at least for the Republicans.

5. No, I understand the term perfectly well.
That is why immigration reform has been talked about for 15 years, but never attempted. Those who clinically understand the issue know that we need amnesty. However, the political calculus says that is a deathwish for any politician, Dem or Rep. That is why we need a true leader on this issue. So far we haven't gotten one. Not Clinton, not Bush, and not Obama.

9. OK, I get what you're saying. I misunderstood.
And I agree. It's just too big, too complex, too expensive, to much of a minefield to wander into.

Like the weather - everybody talks about it, but nobody does anything about it.
