Rec this up for the freepbaggers to see!

The crowd reaches way towards the Washington Monument and way to the sides.

Might be bigger than the Beck rally.

No reflecting pool in the middle. Think about that.

The wave:

36. Found an estimate, National Parks Service says, 300,000
http://www.mediaite.com/online/how-many-people-are-at-the-jon-stewarts-rally-to-restore-sanity/

Thus far, the big question following yesterday’s event appears to be how many people attended. Answer from the ground: a lot. Interestingly CBS is estimating the crowd at 87,000. NBC quoted the National Parks service which put it at 300,000. Based solely on my perspective from the ground and the fact I was in Washington for the Inauguration I would err on the side of NBC and the National Parks. But the discrepancy begs the question: how do you lose 200,000 people?

78. I would say Beck got a lot less than Jon
You have to remember who is attending each rally. Beck's followers would therefore resemble the same audience that posts to FR, NOT to DU. As this is the case to a greater degree, you have to imagine a fuckload of older, fatter, WASPs whose personal girth is that of a Macy Day's parade balloon at a Beck rally, while a Jon Stewart audience is lean, green, and far more intelligent. We don't have morons hanging tea bags off hats, or purple bandaids on our cheeks.

80. I would say about 300K
Based on seeing other photos of rallies in the DC news, I'd say that 300K was about right. To put it in perspective, there were 1.2 MILLION at the Obama Inauguration. And it was only the second-most-attended thing on the Mall. I forget what the largest was, but I think it was the MLK rally back in the '60's.

and I agree with you...way more than 150,000. You could do a graph of the mall all the way back to Wa. Monument and do a body scan per person. Park Service could do it...Mathematician could do it.

We will see how it's reported in the NYT/WaPo Tomorrow Morning and the rest of the Media particularly the RW C-Span on their "Morning (Idiot) Journal."

44. Sorry, but I just had to hold my nose and look
The article on their website is mostly pushing the "They say it's not political, but why does it come just before the midterms when Rupert Murdoch is supposed to be restored to his rightful place as God-Emperor?" line. When they do get around to quoting a figure, they say 60,000 (a figure taken from Comedy Central's park permit rather than an actual estimate of attendance).

What a crowd. The Metro was packed like sardines.

Those pictures don't show the sides of the rally. It was so crowded you could hardly move around.

The steps of Smithsonian were like bleachers at a football game.

The side streets were packed for blocks. I got tired of inching along so i left after an hour

and a half.

One funny thing on the Metro... a Michigan fan wearing a Michigan hat and an

Ohio State fan wearing a Buckeye hat ended up pressed up against eachotherand it got a laugh and

people were taking pictures of them.

Fun crowd. Very fun crowd. JAM PACKED ALL THE WAY.

Compared to the bagger protestors that come to DC I did not feal as if anyone here wanted to strangle me. The baggers at the Beck Rally? As a friend who watched them noted, you quickly learn the first rule: "Don't talk to anyone." ANGRY FREAKS.

The folks at this one? I wish I coulda talked to everyone. Great folks! NORMAL PEOPLE.

66. Just got back. Biggest rally of my life.
I have been to huge rallies (anti-war), and sporting events (U-M stadium with 110,000), but I have never seen anything like this. It's not just the mall; every inch of the Smithsonian Museums' steps were covered. It wasn't just the Mall; we walked up 7th Street, and the road was closed and packed. Will be back with pics, but it was awesome.

I see already that the Washington Post isn't talking numbers, and haven't really seen estimates. I can't guess; have never seen anything like it. I do note the Post is downplaying it. Major papers across the nation, like the Detroit Free Press, aren't mentioning it, even though Beck was a lead story for them. Anyway, don't get your hopes up. By Sunday a.m., it will be maybe half as many as Beck in the media, even though it was actually 10 times the number.

But it was a very special day anyway. Gridlock doesn't even begin to describe it. Thanks to all from across the nation who joined us in DC today.

84. I bet it was a great contact high to be there at that
rally today.

Great people, great weather, and a great cause.

It's probably good for at least three solid days of Beck weeping on his program.

99. Over 400K. I'll tell you why
1) Metro reported ridership of 387,000 by 3pm. Almost everyone was going to the rally. I've never seen it so packed for any huge event. Add to that the huge numbers of people bussed in and who via other means of transportation.

2) People were packed in MUCH more tightly on the Mall than usual. Higher density means normal crowd counts should be increased.

3) LOTS of people couldn't even make it to the Mall area to be counted. There were 10s of thousands milling around on the streets were they couldn't be counted. Most people couldn't hear or see because the speakers didn't go back far enough so we left.

110. I am inclined to agree. Almost as many as the inauguration, maybe. Many more people off to sides.
At one point, I was in an interstection JAM-PACKED and got nervous and got out off the side as soon as I could. Got a little scary. It wasn't like that everywhere, but very packed.

114. We also did that (couldn't see at all; heard parts) and a lot of people left with us.
It was also frustrating that wireless service was nonexistent due to overload, so once you were separated from others in your party, which was easy to do in the huge densely packed crowds, you couldn't reconnect, so you went elsewhere hoping to get reception and reconnect.

106. Looking at these pictures one has to be proud to be
a liberal. These are the good people in these old United States; the folks we all have to stand up and fight for; all together.

Watching Becks Rally to restore Horror has to be the biggest wakeup call ever to anyone with an ounce of sense.

The difference in the people is both stunning a frightening.
