What if the Republicans do the "right" thing for the wrong reasons?
I have had a disturbing thought... What if the Republicans do the right thing for the wrong reasons? Should we support them?

There has been talk by some Republicans (and concerns voiced by writers on the left) that there are going to be investigations into the Obama presidency if the Republicans take back one or both branches of congress. There's even talk of starting impeachment proceedings (over what is a detail they'll figure out later...) Sane people know that this is ridiculous; they're choosing -now- to start investigating abuses of power by the White House?

But... What if the Right takes one of the Left's talking points and runs with it? Many are disappointed that the Bush administration war crimes will not be investigated. Some people have even written that refusing to investigate a war crime is itself a war crime. What if the Republicans follow up on this thought?

How would we react if the Republicans try to prosecute Obama for -not- prosecuting Bush? They don't even have to investigate Bush themselves... that phase can be conveniently forgotten or delayed. Or maybe they can investigate Bush themselves, and then -exonerate- him. Then they get the best of all worlds.

The argument that they would never throw one of their own under the bus doesn't count; that's being consistent and logical. Bush wasn't really a Republican, and we've always been at war with Eastasia.

While this idea is insane, it would actually be one of the more logical and ethical things to come out of the Republicans in years.

Why can't this happen? How do we react if the Republicans, against all odds, do the "right" thing?

1. Mindboggling. Most of the Republicans are on the record as defending Bush torture program
They are going to investigate Obama's birthplace and his "dangerous socialist plot to destroy the constitution".

5. Of course Bush wasn't really a Republican...
That's just Eastasian propaganda.

Maybe he once was, but then he betrayed "true Republican/Conservative" values. That's why people are being called on to elect/re-elect "true conservatives"... They'll do it right this time, really!

The kind of Republicans whom are in office now are NOT the "responsible" and "reasonable" type and after this upcoming election, we'll have even more nuts to deal with in Congress-if not a majority of them. Furthermore, however much I think Buscho needs to be officially investigated and prosecuted for a whole raft of things that they did while in office that were arguably illegal, I'm NEVER going to line up behind any effort by the Republicans to go after Obama simply for not following up on things that THEIR (P)resident and his agents did while they were in office and that THEY refused to hold him accountable for. If they want to go after Bushco directly and/or call on the Obama administration to go after them criminally, then, well, it's a day late and a dollar short but I guess it would be welcome. Failing to go after Bush for his misdeeds while he was in office and while THEY were in control of Congress and enthusiastically supporting his re-election in 2004- after already being already aware of some of the illegal stuff going on (i.e. Gitmo, no WMD in Iraq, Abu Gharib)- should now and forever be THEIR "shame". The Republican Party bears even MORE responsibility for not going after Bushco than President Obama and the Democrats should ever. As some people have already (correctly) pointed out, the Republicans, if given power, are NOT going to go after President Obama and his administration for anything even mildly "responsible" and/or "reasonable". Like the Clinton years, it will only be one crazy right-wing/Fox-hyped fake *scandal* after another- certainly nothing any of us could (or should) EVER get behind and support IMHO. :eyes:

6. Since when has insanity been a reason for them to -not- do something? nt

8. I was thinking about this when George Clooney was on with Maher last week...

He talked about how conservative Republicans have been his closest allies regarding getting aid to Africa.

And I was thinking, what is their real interest and reason for helping?

I can't believe it's humanitarian. I think a large part of it is Christian Dominionism...another part corporate interests...military interests...but not genuine compassion.

11. They won't go after him for a legitimate reason as such would suck them down in the undertow as well

No stress needed on this account Republicans seldom do the right thing even for the worst reasons.
