Question: How common is it to have a large hurricane in the Caribbean in November?

Anyone know?

1. Most late-season hurricanes form in or near the Gulf of Mexico.
The Caribbean isn't unheard of, but this one is unusually far south.

2. except it is Tomas this year, no H
I guess there would have been an H, but Jesus was using it for his middle initial.

either that or Hubert Horatio Humphrey took them all.

My name happens to be Thomas. So I remembered that Thomas was on the list three or four years ago, but they never made it to the Ts.

3. Hurricane season ends Nov. 30
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 02:31 AM by rabs

So still a month left for the storms to form in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

Tomas is looking like a biggie.

Just hope it does not hit Hispanola, because if there is something Haiti does not need it is a hurricane coming on top of the current outbreak of cholera (that has killed over 300 people).

Even more so for the 1.3 million Haitians still living in tent cities and makeshift shelters because of the earthquake in January.

4. It's actually Tomas - and I lived through a much smaller November hurricane
That hit the week before Thanksgiving. Hurricane Kate was only a Cat 1 when it hit the coast but it still knocked out power for most of this area and it was a week before we got power back. The Big Bend of Florida had not had a hurricane hit directly for nearly twenty years. Hundreds of trees took down power lines, blocked roads and fell on lots of houses. These days they are more proactive about trimming the trees, but with our canopy roads, we'd probably still get lots of trees down again.

The spaghetti models for Tomas look really funky - and it does not look good for Haiti:

5. Damn -- can't the Haitian people catch a break?
When will their nightmare end?

6. Hopefully Tomas will turn and not go over Haiti
The spaghetti models are so diverse, it is hard to tell right now where it will go.

7. No, not that one, but the similarities are striking.
They both blow, their respective potential for damage, etc....
