"Think about a breadbox".
Am I the only one who smiled at that arcane reference as to the size of the "terror-boxes"?

I wonder how many young ones here have even seen a breadbox:)

for their edification

4. I need a good bread box to save on plastic bags
But none of the ones I have found sold as bread boxes are large enough for my home baked bread, even if my loaves are not as big as the one in your picture.

5. I think that many homes these days are too well-heated
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 04:29 PM by SoCalDem
I actually used to have a breadbox just like that picture, and "modern" bread from the store would always mold before it got used up..
My grandmother used a breadbox like the picture for her homemade cookies.. sugar cookies, peanut butter & oatmeal raisin.. My grandfather was a cookie-hound:)

Home made breads don't mold as much, but they dry out pretty fast.

We are not big-time bread eaters, so as much as I hate to do it, I often keep bread in the refrigerator:(

6. My bread keeps pretty good but hubby eats it pretty fast
He takes a sandwich to work every day and often has one after dinner. Since I am trying to keep my portions down, he is getting smaller portions, too, but gets hungry later. A PB&J sandwich is his substitute for the absent desserts.

I'm making bread about ever four or five days. I'll usually eat one or two slices out of a loaf, but hubby eats the rest.

8. My husband makes bread about 4 days a week...
we also have the problem with finding a way to store it as it's a 2-pound loaf (bread machine). We tend to wrap it up in a towel and leave it on the counter, cutting off slices as needed, but this week our lab figured out there's a prize inside and she stole a half loaf! At least it was whole wheat, lol!

9. Try freezing it..
I bake alot of bread, usually two loafs every couple of days.. I leave one loaf whole and out, it usually disappears in two days or so (roommates are like locusts). I slice the other one up then place it either in the freezer or fridge. It helps keep the molding and staling process at bay... That and I think this is an old wives tale but I've heard the harder the crust at the start, the better the bread will keep.. not sure if that's true or not..

14. We really go through it too quickly to freeze.
I'll freeze other kinds of breads ahead of time but not regular WW bread.

11. My current thought is to get a food service container
The kind that Alton Brown uses to put things on on his shows. We have a big one that we use for salad but I would need a little larger one for my bread. I use a 4x12" bread pan to make 1.5 pound loaves - that makes the bread a good size for sandwiches and longer, so lower heel to slices ratio. But it is too long for most bread boxes and on a good loaf, it is also too tall.

We're in Florida, so I want something that seals to keep the bugs out.

I learn so much from watching his show. I am going to make his curry pea soup this Sunday.

16. I catch his show whenever I can
And for this insomniac that is often at 2 or 3 AM when they re-run the episodes!

13. Thanks for the suggestion.
We're in FL too and those bugs get into everything! Usually one large loaf will last a whole day during the work/school week, longer on the weekend.

15. LOL! I almost read that as the bugs eating everything
Then I realized you must have a family to feed. It's just the two of here and it would be very hard for us to eat an entire loaf in a day!

3. "Is it bigger than a breadbox?"
Wasn't that one of the questions on the radio quiz show "Twenty Questions"? All us kids knew what that meant--we had but to look at the kitchen counter!

Ah the memories!

7. What's funny is that right before he said that, I was almost expecting
the reporter (was it Chuck Todd?) to ask him: "Was it bigger than a bread box?" and then he said that, lol.

10. We had one when I was a kid, and for some reason I still expect to see it when I go home,
even though it's been gone for 30 years and the kitchen completely remodeled.

17. Alas, the bread box is another piece of antiquity.
Like the coach whip and the horse drawn buggy, time and technology pass them by.

Remember when no kitchen was complete without the matching ensemble of bread box, sugar, flour, etc. containers?

My mother still has them, but when her generation is gone, the future of the bread box is grim.

18. Thank you; I'd have called that a bread bin, and had been imagining a crate for carrying bread
In Britain, the container to keep bread in (and I can't quite understand why the US seems to be giving them up, from what people are saying here) is called a 'bread bin'.

http://thecookskitchen.com/browse_4509

So when I heard 'breadbox', I thought it'd be the size of one of those crates that holds maybe 16 loafs, closely packed.
