I put it more in the category of a Laci Peterson/plane crash/tornado/insert not-that-important story here type thing. I think there's a bandwagon effect too. None of the 'big 3' cable news networks (ok, 2 and 1/2 . . . sorry CNN) wants to be the one left out if it does turn out to be big, so they all do the saturation thing. I was rather irritated too because I had just started dong dishes/cleaning and wanted to have something on in the background and I knew right away that they'd be filling the air with nothing for hours and hours on end. Don't really see a conspiracy at work, just our lame news machine doing what it does.
