MSNBC's gentle GOP-favoring spin, 4-4.30 pm edition
Edited on Thu Oct-28-10 03:48 PM by Stinky The Clown
Rattigan had on Poindexter, the WaPo editorial page editor (I think that's who he is) and and some guy with Larry King braces and a strong southern accent. They're talking about what might happen in DC after the election.

Larry King Braces guy sez "When the repubicans take over the House and quite likely the Senate . . . ."

No one says a word, as if this intonement carried the same weight as the two stone tablets Moses is said to have carried down from the mount.

So there you have it. Dems will lose. Everyone got that?

Stay home. No need to vote. It is a done deal.

Immediately before this proclamation, Poindexter, to his credit, is trying to point out the total fuckedupedness of "the polls". Democrats are trailing repubs 46/40 on generic house vote, *but* (points out Poindexter) when asked if they favor the repub or the Dem in *their* race, the numbers flip perfectly: 46/40 in favor of a preference for the Dem. Larry King braces guy immediately launches into some Exorcist head spin about McConnell and Boner knowing they'll have to compromise if they wanna retain their new majorities going forward . . . . yadda yadda fucking yadda. It was immediately following this that he ended with the gem above.

Rattigan is the host here on supposedly liberal MSNBC. He sez nothing to Larry King braces guy. Poindexter, generally a left leaner, in my observation, is also silent.

The net result of all this cutie pie shit: People very subtly get another dose of "Dems will lose so stay home and don't vote."

MSNBC - worse than Fox because they're sneaky about it.

Fixed in OP now.

6. No, both. My quote is pretty much exact.
The "quite likely the Senate" is a hedged prediction that the repubs will win.

The fact is, when Mike Castle lost to Magic Witch, the chances of a repub Senate takeover went down to near zero.

14. Yes, and each is called, generically a (lower case) house.
"They will take both houses in the fall election." is a reasonable and correct sentence.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia that uses the term.

The Great Depression ushered in President Franklin Roosevelt and strong control by Democrats<29> and historic New Deal policies. Roosevelt's election in 1932 marked a shift in government power towards the executive branch. Numerous New Deal initiatives came from the White House rather than being initiated by Congress.<30> The Democratic Party controlled both houses of Congress for many years.<31><32><33> During this time, Republicans and conservative southern Democrats<34> formed the Conservative Coalition.<33><35> Democrats maintained control of Congress during World War II.<36><37> Congress struggled with efficiency in the postwar era partly by reducing the number of standing congressional committees.<38> Southern Democrats became a powerful force in many influential committees although political power alternated between Republicans and Democrats during these years. More complex issues required greater specialization and expertise, such as space flight and atomic energy policy.<38> Senator Joseph McCarthy exploited the fear of communism and conducted televised hearings.<39><40> In 1960, Democratic candidate John F. Kennedy narrowly won the presidency and power shifted again to the Democrats who dominated both houses of Congress until 1994.

If you google the phase "both houses of congress" you will get many many hits that demonstrate the same thing.

8. One guy in suspenders with no name says Repubs will win, and the ENTIRE
Democratic base stays home? Really?

You can't be serious.

One guy that no one has ever heard of makes a foolish statement on a low-rated, afternoon cable "news" program, and suddenly voter apathy and inertia takes hold of the entire electorate?

That's a stretch.

9. It is simply part of a pattern
It happens constantly. This was simply a random half hour's event.

So, yeah. I'm serious. MSNBC is an insidious media operation. They don't do Beck histrionics. Instead, they delude people who favor the tone of their network, which seems all nice and "liberally."

13. Well, I agree that MSNBC is pathetic propaganda and usually unwatchable
I just don't think they have any influence. They're preaching to a pretty small choir.
