"Did you hear that everybody? The Thomases are coming!" shouted the mayor. The townspeople cheered.

The Thomases get closer. The lookout, peering through a telescope, jumps in surprise and turns to the crowd gathered below.

"The Justice's wife is a hon-"

The church bell rang in celebration, cutting off the lookout's cry.

"What did he say?" a lady asked the mayor.

"He said, the Justice's wife is a honey!" responded the mayor.

The lookout cried out in fustration. "No, doggonit, she's a h-"

CLANG! went the church bell.

"He says they're here!" cried the mayor. The townspeople cheered again!

"No! Dagnabbit! She's a cra-"

CLANG! rang the bell again.

"What did he say?" another lady asked the mayor.

"He said she's a Christian!" replied the mayor. The townspeople cheered again.

The lookout threw up his hands in disgust and began to climb down from the roof.

Justice Thomas and his wife appeared from around a house on the edge of town, only a few dozen yards from the cheering townspeople. The citizens continue to cheer as the Thomases approach, until suddenly they drop silent, mouthes agape.

"Your wife's a honkey," the mayor says automatically.

The "Welcome!" sign snaps and rolls itself up tightly as the lookout rushes up to the mayor, gasping slightly.

"The Justice's wife is a cracker!" he pants out, then looks around at the stunned crowd. "But you knew that already."
