NYC DOE is planning to release Teacher performance data to the public
This comes despite promises to the UFT that this data would not be released.

http://gothamschools.org/2010/10/20/city-release-of-teacher-ratings-would-break-2008-deal-with-union/

The release would cover all 12,000 city teachers who have value-added reports, which measure a teacher’s effectiveness based on how good she is at improving her students’ test scores from the beginning of the year to the end.

The reports are a relatively new way of measuring teacher effectiveness and have been criticized by some researchers for their wide margins of error.

Reality Based Educator said it well in his blog:

The LA Times used seven years of data and the MOE was 20% or higher.

Kleinberg have used 3 years of data.

These scores will be worthless for telling how good a teacher is.

But you can bet Bloomberg and Klein will be using the data to call for the firing of the lowest 20% of those teachers.

And a complicit "news" media - like the corporate-owned whores at NY1 or NBC - will go along for the ride.

It is no accident that these scores are being released AFTER Waiting for Superman, the Oprah "education" shows and NBC's Education Nation Summit.

Kleinberg will be using all that p.r. to back up their claims that the bottom 20% of the teachers on this list are "bad" and must improve in two years or be fired.

1. Absolutely horrible. What a disgusting turn of events.
Why anyone thinks this is a good idea is beyond me.

5. One of the issues at hand is the truth of these measures.

4. A teacher at Gotham schools had this to say:
My wish in my professional life is to be allowed to do my job. I require only that my privacy be respected- on the job and off. I have no objection to parents in my school, and my school only, seeing my ratings, if they feel that the hocus-pocus being presented will actually be useful.

In fact, in the spirit of sharing, I plan to release my Effective/Ineffective Parenting Ratings. I have a formula, although no one understands it, based on only one criteria. Sounds about right.

Snarky but in a ways very true.

8. so you are punished for having bright students
that already test in the top percentiles at the beginning of the year???

or is it a way to fire teachers who well, teach kids how to think for themselves, look at evidence, draw logical conclusions and write them in essays as opposed to filling in a bubble on a state mandated brainwashing exercise... sorry test..???

9. Okay. Now let's release the performance record
for all doctors. Let's find out how many of their patients got sick or died. Then we can have all lawyers required to list their cases won and lost posted on line.

Then, since they have responsibility too, let's release the records on all parents, their legal records, their job performance records, their tax records.

Face it. The neocons have won. They are getting their way.
