UN Descries US Immigrant Situation
United Nations, May 21 (Prensa Latina) A UN human rights recorder censured the United States on Monday for the arbitrary detention, racial and ethnic discrimination and violations against immigrants.
# US Senate Starts Immigration Debate

"There are even complaints of mothers separated from their children and held in detention centers far from their homes," said UN Human Rights of Immigrants recorder, Mexican Jorge Bustamante.

In his news release at the United Nations following his visit to the US April 30-May 17, Bustamante decried violation of the rights of immigrant women and children and the use of excessive force detaining men in their homes.

He expressed disagreement with the decision of US federal authorities to cancel, at the last moment and without explanation, some of his scheduled visits to detention centers in Texas and New Jersey.

The UN official, who visited California and Arizona and also met with immigrants in southern Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, New York and Washington DC, will present a report to the Council on Human Rights, including recommendations for Washington to sign and ratify the convention regulating the rights of immigrants and their families and put in force national policies to protect the rights and wellbeing of these people.
