French oil workers have shut down much of the country's fuel supply network today as they intensified nation-wide labour protests against government plans to raise the retirement age.

The strike, which has sent French motorists and trucks driver scurrying to horde gasoline and diesel fuel in anticipation of shortages, is part of a wave of discontent sweeping Europe as governments introduce austerity measures to bring down spending and debts in the wake of the 2008 global recession. There are also reports today of anti-government actions, demonstrations and some riots in Greece, Portugal, and Italy.

In France all 12 of the nation's oil refineries as well as the fuel pipeline supplying Paris have been shut down by strikers, who have also blockaded fuel depots.

In response, police moved in to break up fuel depot blockades near Marseille and Clermont-Ferrand in southern France. Some Air France flights from Paris' Orly airport were canceled when runway workers joined the walkout.

3. We need to bring to the US some of these organizers.
At the very least, our Union leaders should be picking their brain.
