Dems Outraising GOP -- In The South!
Edited on Mon May-21-07 11:03 AM by CatWoman
Now here's an interesting subplot to the story of the success Dem Presidential candidates are having -- the Dems appear to actually be outraising their GOP counterparts in, of all places, the GOP stronghold of the south.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tallied up the numbers and reached some startling conclusions:

Something unusual happens to the political map when it's overlain with first-quarter fund-raising for the 2008 presidential election: Georgia, like much of the South, turns a pale shade of blue.

While Republican candidates at the state and local levels hold a distinct edge in fund-raising now that the GOP controls Georgia's statehouse, the party doesn't dominate at the presidential level.

The specifics, according to the AJC, are that Dems outpaced the GOP in first-quarter fundraising in the following eight southern states:

Georgia
North Carolina
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
Kentucky
Virginia
Florida

...while the GOP led Dems in only four states:

South Carolina
Tennessee
Arkansas
Texas

2. Arkansas surprises me a bit.
It's always seemed like more of a fence sitter than other southern states. To wit, Democrats control 5 out of the 6 Congressional seats from Arkansas, including both Senate seats.

22. If you took Bentonville (Wal-Mart HQ) and its environs out of Ark.
and maybe annexed it to China or something :P , the rest of Ark. might well be pale blue, too.

Easy to see Republican ineptitude looking at the mess still down here from Katrina and Rita. then there are all the military bases in the South. We have vet centers in Mississippi, an Air Force base, a Seabee base, and an Army training base all within an hour of where I live. Our service people and their families are NOT happy with with our war-mongering president.

Edited to add, this is still heartening news to read!

12. I think the AJC is making a bit of a mountain over a molehill
I don't know how significant these early-days fundraising numbers really.

Still it's encouraging, and probably pissing off any number of Freepers who looked at the AJC this morning.

15. I think it's because Dems in the South are desparate to be taken
seriously by our national counterparts. If that means making them come here to get our money, then so be it.

This is a cry for help National Dems! Please don't ignore us anymore! We need your help! We're drowning in Republican ignorance down here and if our money is our only lifeline, then we'll use it!

30. I agree, RubyDuby.
I'm in Towns County which is about as red as it gets, but I still get so tired of being ignored in national elections. I hear more and more from people who supported * and now regret it, but they often go on to say, "but I can't vote for a Dem because they will take our guns away" or some such nonsense. These people need to be EDUCATED and need to see our candidates campaigning in this state. Writing off the South as unreachable only entrenches some beliefs that the Dems represent only those "wackos" living in California, or the "damn yankees." (In quotes because it's not my opinion, of course.)

Depends on the candidate. S.1431/H.R.2038 was a big deal in 2004, and Brady II was a big deal in the mid-'90s through '00. Yes, those would have banned a lot of people's guns. But look at the Webb/Macacawitz race in Virginia in '06; Webb successfully got the issue off the table by ruling out more bans and whatnot, and running on the other issues.

But with the right candidate, a lot of southern states are definitely in play. I'm in NC, and it should be pointed out that Mike Easley (D) beat his repub opponent 55%/45%, even as the same voters rejected Kerry/Edwards 45%/55% (despite the fact that Edwards is from NC). But our state government is solidly blue.

Dems and the Gun Issue - Now What? (written in '04, largely vindicated in '06, IMO).

would finally put an end to the neo-con agenda!

I fell as if I am a prophet among prohets...we all knew he was an asshole, and now his ineptitude has worn down the GOP naysayers...:D

Hearing that Chambliss was booed is music to my ears, I've always thought he stole the election, and when he got in the Senate, he was just another lapdog...:grr: I despise that asshole for what he did to Max! it is one thing to win a fair fight, but Chambliss and his thugs did nothing but rag on Max, and lied like mangy dogs.
