Pat Sajak's Coming to Take Your Vote Away
Source: Gawker

Syndicated hairpiece Pat Sajak, host of television's beloved Wheel of Fortune, is the most brilliant American conservative. And he has a novel idea to share: Should public employees really be allowed to vote?

No but seriously. He thinks it's a conflict of interest, or at least, uh, should be a conflict of interest! Public employees might "benefit directly" if their choice wins. Isn't that terrible when human beings vote on the basis of what would be the exact right thing for them? There's no way that should be allowed in a democracy.

... Not that he thinks public employees should be denied the right to vote, just... something like that? The stakes are too high nowadays to keep people enfranchised, is the point.

I'm not suggesting that public employees should be denied the right to vote, but that there are certain cases in which their stake in the matter may be too great.

Keep typing, rich man.

Of course we all have a stake in one way or another in most elections, and many of us tend to vote in favor of our own interests. However, if, for example, a ballot initiative appears that might cap the benefits of a certain group of state workers, should those workers be able to vote on the matter?

2. What a fuckwad...
Civil servants only have control over their pay to the extent that they can negotiate collectively with their employer. They can't vote themselves a pay raise.

He should stick to smiling and telling people to spin that wheel...He's not good for anything else.

7. I am so glad I never watch Hangman
I remember when his sad-ass talk show was tanking they brought Rush Limbaugh in to replace him for the last few weeks.

This was back before we all knew who Rush Limbaugh was. Oh god I miss those innocent, ignorant days.

10. Even right wingers think Sajak is an idiot
FAUX Noize cancelled his talk show within a month or so. And his attempt at a late night show on CBS lasted about as long (though it was long enough for him to schedule Mush Limpballs as a guest host at least once, which pretty much established where his political leanings were, even back then)

21. I don't think "conflict of interest" means what you think it means, Pat.
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 03:16 PM by DirkGently
I actually had a discussion with a RWer somewhere here in cyberspace along similar lines. The person was adamant that appointing the former head of an anti-smoking children's health advocacy group to some federal health-related position was a "conflict of interest."

Because, the person clearly would be an advocate for children and against smoking, and that's in conflict with ... anti-health, pro-smoking interests, I guess. Mr. RW Could not see how appointing an oil company exec to the EPA was different in any way.

I think the root of it is that current American conservative ideology is that the pursuit of money at all costs is the right of every person/corporation-person, while, say, the public interest is a dangerous goal that must be eyed with suspicion, lest it interfere with the making of money in some way. :)

Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

Maybe we should hire citizens of other countries to serve
in Congress.

money to a campaign or candidate?

How is this anything other than a kickback?

I am so glad I don't like that show (except for that first shot of Vanna walking across the stage, that I like)
