Sacramento BeeThe Oakland-based Center for Environmental Health said today that it found high levels of lead, in violation of federal standards, in five children's products sold at Wal-Mart and Target stores.
CEH said the California attorney general's office has notified the retailers, and in response, Target is stopping all sales of the products. But CEH said Wal-Mart told the state that is pulling some products only from its California stores.
CEH said independent testing it commissioned revealed high lead levels in two chairs sold for toddlers at Target. Testing showed that one of the chairs contained more than 70 times the legal limit for lead.
Testing of Wal-Mart products found high lead levels in toddlers' bean bag chairs, youth boxing gloves and toy foam beads sold for children's jewelry. The items ranged from more than three times to more than 45 times the legal limit, CEH said.
