The University of California does not have to give credit for classes taught with fundie "textbooks"

the fundies took them to court and lost. Now SCOTUS won't hear their appeal:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/13/BAAC1FRR5N.DTL

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal Tuesday from Christian schools that want the University of California to grant college-prep credit for courses with religious viewpoints - using textbooks, UC says, that replace science with the Bible....

UC requires certain high school courses for admission and says it reviews their content to make sure they cover subjects that incoming students need. University officials said some of the Christian schools' classes in biology, history, English and religion didn't pass the test - a conclusion that the schools blamed on discrimination.

Biology texts, one professor concluded, teach students to reject any scientific evidence that contradicted the Bible. A history text declared the Bible to be the "unerring source for analysis" of past events, in the view of another expert, and gave short shrift to women, non-Christians and some ethnic groups.

Another UC evaluator said an English literature course did not require students to read novels or plays, but instead presented an anthology, "Classics for Christians," that "insists on specific interpretations" of excerpted works.

:bounce:

What's really scary is that there are 800 schools in California alone teaching this drivel. And people worry about the quality of public schools?!

Note: for those of you back East, UC is not just Berkeley but a ten-campus statewide system, notably also including UCLA.

3. I don't think that community colleges have the same requirements for admission
also, they are not state-run but are controlled by a patchwork of local community college districts (for instance, Santa Clara County alone has three).

Not sure how this might apply to the California State University system (a separate system featuring more locally-focused schools like SF State, San Jose State, Fresno State, etc.)

5. No, only to the University of California. I have doubts that this extends to even...
...the State University System ~~ which is separate from the UC system. I would highly doubt if it extends to the Calif JC system.

4. I am a UC grad...
...and I am proud to see that they did this. There is no place for junk like this in academia.

8. Unbelievable! Our daughter taught in the UC system and told us how unbelievably unprepared for
college-level courses the students from these "Christian" schools generally were. ;)
