Something is under the radar regarding tonight's Brown/Whitman Debate at the Dominican University of California. Something all Californians and Americans should be aware of.
In 1992, when the General Electric toadie and corporate pleaser and climber, Tom Brokaw was the moderator for the 1992 Democratic Presidential Debate. From the opening moments of the debate, it was clear that Brokaw could barely mask his animosity toward former California Jerry Brown. When Brown, who was the first U.S. Presidential candidate to use an 800 number (Jerry was first in so many things that are taken for granted today) attempted to give out that number, Brokaw, who had been rude from the outset to Brown, jumped all over Jerry Brown.
Without a flinch, without a second of hesitation, the great Jerry Brown punched right back at Brokaw informing the national television audience that Mr. Tom Brokaw was an employee for the General Electric Corporation, which owned Brokaw's NBC, and which had given $350,000 in the 1990 elections. Brokaw was clearly furious with Brown for making that statement at the time, which most Americans did not know.
Of course, those who can remember, Tom Brokaw also did a hatchet job Governor Howard Dean as well in 2004. You know the same NBC whose Corporate CEO, Jack Welch, screamed to his NBC employees to "call the election" for George W. Bush in 2000. The incident was video taped. Welsh, who first denied it, later admitted that he had abused his position of the public corporation in trying to make its NBC Division call the election against Al Gore. That would be the same NBC that employed Tom Brokaw then, too.
So, tonight will clearly have an undertone to it that I have yet to see anyone in the media mention.
I remember. But I feel no one else does. It sets up quite a dynamic this evening where another sleazy Corporate CEO, like Jack Welsh, takes the stage. Meg Whitman, a darling of Wall Street will be debating Jerry Brown on NBC with, yes, Tom Brokaw.
No one seems to know. I know.
And Jerry Brown knows. And Tom (General Electric) Brokaw knows.
Don't tell me for one second that Tom Brokaw will a fair moderator in this debate. Past is prologue.
Please, help me pass this information along.
