Let me preface my remarks by saying I don't blame President Obama. Now to my rant.
I had a successful small publishing comapany up until 2008. I published guides and magazines that were geared to the real estate and leisure indusrties. It was so small I was the only employee. I would use the money I generated from ads I sold to pay the printer, the designer, and the writer. I would do most of the distribution myself. Selling can be fun when people have money to buy what you're selling. But it sucks when said people have no money. Because of the downturn in real estate and leisure my business was taken out and shot. It exists in the same way a person on life support exists, barely.
My girlfriend is a senior accountant with twenty years of public and private accounting experience. We moved from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale in June because she found a senior accounting job. We stayed in hotels I found on priceline while we were looking for a "permanent" place to stay.. That's probably one of the few benefits of this crappy economy that you can stay at three and three one half star hotels for anywhere from $25.00 to $55.00. For those of you who know Fort Lauderdale I have lived in Oaklnad Park, Sunrise, Hollywood, and Los Olas, In fact, I have called nineteen places "home" since June.
The company my girlfriend was working for was purchased by a company in Dallas and they are going to fill her position and the positions of her colleagues with existing staff. Her job ended September 30. She was offered no severance.
I went to monster.com and keyed in ACCOUNTANT positions that were posted today. I check them everyday. There are 35 job openings for accountants in the entire state of Florida and most of them have been posted before. Florida is the most populous state in the nation. My girlfriend told me when she first came here from the Philippines in 2000 she was going on appointments everyday.
At least we aren't homeless. I'm tapped out but my girlfriend and I were still spending $15.00 to $20.00 a week giving money to the various homeless people we saw while driving. I saw homeless people on wheel chairs, on walkers, and on lawn chairs. I'm surprised I didn't see them on skates.
This economy is broken and it sucks...
