The Modern Head shop? Smoking stuff?
I was in a little head shop yesterday. Here in Kansas City, Mo. And they had all kinds of little pipes and bongs and hookas in there. No one ever uses the words bong or pot or whatever because this is a "smoke" shop.

Are they going to get busted for having paraphenalia? There was another much bigger store here called Seventh Heaven (record store) which had a "smoking area" and I think they got busted big time.

I hope not. It's a cool little shop with lots of oils and jewelery and stuff.

Since I am an old hippy I really like those little shops. I like all the stuff and the way they smell like sandalwood. I like to just wander around and look at all the little things.

2. They won't get busted. It's not against the law to have a bong.
It is what goes in it that is against the law.

I miss the little shop that was around the corner from my house in MI. I didn't "smoke", but I loved the way it smelled in there. Comforting.

5. So what constitutes "drug paraphenalia?"
I think drug paraphenalia is illegal here.

8. I think it's the labeling. Water pipes for bong etc. I'm not sure though.
That's a good question. The one I used to live by had been there for 4 decades.

15. Actually
There's a reason why head shops advertise/display bongs, pipes, etc. as either 'novelty items' or 'for use with tobacco'. If they displayed the items as a means to imbibe marijuana then their products would fall under the description of drug paraphernalia. It is illegal to sell and/or distribute drug paraphernalia, as per Federal law.

3. The city hates the big head shop here, but they've managed to avoid trouble.
Of course, the minute you say the word "bong" (the correct term is "water pipe"), you'll be swiftly escorted out of the shop.

6. Yea. You can't use the "b" word in the store.
Sigh. I really miss being able to smoke a little now and then. On a nice day like today when I don't have anything important to do.

I love the get high once in a while.

4. That sounds just like things are even in California (at least in San Diego)

If you say the word "bong" in a head shop full of bongs, the employees tell you to leave the store immediately.

7. So are hooka pipes really only for tobacco products.
Did anyone ever use them for pot?

I used a bong one time and never again. It was too strong. Made me paranoid. I don't like being out of it. I just like to feel really good.

11. You have to ask for a water pipe or a vase
Did anyone ever use them for pot?

Of course. People always have done that.

13. See, I don't remember anyone using a hooka pipe.
Maybe I just wasn't ever around where they were using one.

Bongs? yes. Little pipes? yes.

9. I think there may be a few states
with more draconian laws where head shops can get hassled but mostly they are left alone.

As others have said, don't say 'bong' or pot/weed/ganja/etc in the shops or they'll likely tell you to leave.

Also, all that glassware they have these days is quite pricey at full cost but you can find out if you are 'cool' if they don't charge you full price. Heh, I was in one of those stores last year for the first time in years and was amazed at the prices on some of the blown-glass pieces. The fellow working there laughed and said the price on the sticker is the 'DB price' (DB=douchebag) and only the douchebags get charged that amount.

I thought that was hilarious, and was quite honored to be let in on the secret as it meant I was not seen as a douchebag.

My mother used to complain because I burn incense. At one time we had six cats! She said I should use that toxic spray crap you get at the grocery store because, 'people will think you smoke pot.' :D That stuff makes me gag! ~the spray crap, not pot! ;)

12. Funny how smells like that can take you back in time so quickly.
Sandalwood, patchouli, musk - I love the way they smell.

Really, those were some of the best times in my life. I still love Indian print bedspreads, lots of pillows on the floor.

And the music from that time? I just love all of it.
