Poll question: Are you LGBT? Have you ever attempted or considered suicide? (Survey)
I am seeking a snapshot of the prevalence of suicide attempts in the LGBT community. Thank you in advance.

1. I considered it as a teenager
but I hasten to add that was in the early 1960's, before Stonewall, when the official line of the American Psychiatric Association was that being gay was a pathology

Kid's just don't get bullied because they are gay. Some of us got bullied for every other fucking reason under the sun.

I'm glad people are talking but it's not just about LGBT kids.

There is something very wrong with the aggressive nature of our society.

7. I have considered it multiple times.
Though I was never bullied in school. If anything I was the bully-er of the queer kids. It's true what they say about bullying gay people... it's probably because you are gay yourself. Dealing with that self-loathing is difficult. Dealing with being raised to believe queers were abominations to god and were going straight to hell fucked me up for a long long time. It required a decade of unlearning before I was finally comfortable with myself. I finally got there in my late 20s.

At 33 now, there's no doubt in my mind what is true. I was born gay. God made me this way. And love is never wrong.

Compared to the internal struggle, the external struggle (homophobes, discrimination, unjust laws & policies) is much easier for me. It is so clear to me what is right and what is wrong and I'm internally confident enough now to stand up for and demand my rights.

Sorry... that was probably more than you asked for... but there you go.

10. I thought several times about it.
At one point, I was looking into ways of killing myself. When I was going to high school. I was the victim of bullying...because I was a "faggot".

11. Yes, like many GLBT youngsters, I had no real friends as a child.

I was very lonely, and that was my life up through the day I left that shit hole stinky little town.

So yes, I had some very bad days, even as far back as 10 years old, when I thought maybe that would be a good way to end my constant, ongoing, psychological pain.

It's only since I came out of the closet and live as an openly gay man that I have managed to essentially dispel depression from my life. I can't recall the last time I felt truly depressed, let alone suicidal - though chemical imbalances or other life events can trigger depression, I essentially left depression behind back around college, many years ago. :)

And by the way, I did have a gay dorm floor mate who actually attempted it when I was a freshman in college.
