The Abominable Snow Crab: Furry crab discovered south of Easter Island - pic
Edited on Tue Oct-05-10 09:31 PM by Kadie

The Abominable Snow Crab: Census of Marine Life explorers have discovered a new, furry crab species south of Easter Island. Kiwa hirsuta was deemed so unusual that it warranted a whole new family designation, Kiwidae.

Found more info. This crab was actually found in 2005. More really cool pictures of other creatures at the link...

Its fuzzy, winter-white coat might look at home in the Himalaya, but the yeti crab was discovered skittering around hydrothermal vents about a mile and a half (2.4 kilometers) under the South Pacific off Easter Island (map) in March 2005.

The 6-inch (15-centimeter), blind crustacean—officially Kiwa hirsuta—is among the more than 6,000 new species discovered during the Census of Marine Life, a ten-year effort to document all sea life that concluded Monday.

Really cool looking! We have nothing like that, but I really enjoy watching crabs under water, the way they clamber around and pile up on one another is a crack-up...

I may have been born in Pittsburgh, but I've spent 23 years in Maryland. My first thought when I saw "new crab species" was "get out the Old Bay!"

Seen here:

I actually know a guy around town here who looks very similar to Mr. Blobby. Same bald head. Same down-turned corners of his mouth. Same nose that hangs down. Same eating habits...food hanging out of the corner of the mouth onto the chin.

like this one.. The "life" series from the BBC is worth every second. It is profound. It will make you want to sell your stuff and travel the world. (Working towards that now.. :) )

28. Papua New Guinea is thankfully isolated
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 09:28 PM by Pavulon
there are literally pirates roaming the seas there. I would still love to fly into NSW and visit , it would be a trip of a lifetime.

Some places are truly untouched, backpacking in a Nikon would be on my list of stuff to do if money was no object.

A nice macro lens and a 400mm 2.8 prime (heavy but worth it) and a few months would be life changing.
