Beck On Family’s Home Burning Down As Firefighters Watched:
As ThinkProgress reported yesterday, last week South Fulton Fire Department firefighters from Obion, Tennessee, stood by and watched as the Cranick family’s home burned down — which also lead to the death of their three dogs and a cat — because their services were available by subscription only, and the family had not paid the $75 fee. Immediately, right-wing writers at the conservative movement’s bulkhead magazine, The National Review, defended the county and argued that firefighting should not be a public service available to all, regardless of ability to pay.

Now, yet another major conservative has joined the defense. On his radio show this afternoon, leading right-wing talker Glenn Beck and his producer Pat Gray openly mocked the Cranick family. After playing a news clip explaining the situation, Gray adopted a southern drawl and began to mock Gene Cranick’s explanation of how the county’s firefighters refused to help his family.

Beck then went on to complain that “those who are just on raw feeling are not going to understand” that the county’s actions in refusing to assist the Cranicks were justified. He explained that America will be having the “argument” about the case of the Cranicks and that it will go “nowhere if you go onto ‘compassion, compassion, compassion, compassion’ or well, ‘they should’ve put it out, what is the fire department for?’” Beck then went on to say that the Cranicks would be “spongeing off their neighbors” if the fire department had helped them put out their fire. The radio host concluded his rant by saying “this is the kind of stuff that’s going to have to happen, we are going to have to have these kinds of things”:

GRAY: (mocking Cranick’s accent) Even tho’ I hadn’t paid mah seventy five dollahs I thought dey’d put it out. <...> I wanted ‘em to put it out, but dey didn’t put it out.

24. Yup.
Like I said in a post yesterday, our tent has become far too large, and the DLCers and conserva"dems" are shitting all over its base.

We should have told those schmucks they weren't welcome in the first place, and if they didn't like being disillusioned with the crazy the GOP has become and didn't like not being welcome among us they could start their own "pragmatic" "moderate" "centrist" party.

We didn't do that. We suicidally welcomed them with open arms. This is the result.

I protested heavily and never have I been so disappointed in DU as I was. It certainly has me wondering what was said here during Katrina since I was in Katrina and too busy trying to save lives I didn't have the time to check out what was going on on boards. However, I am now grateful that I wasn't able to because after last night I can imagine what was being said about us.

40. no, they're not. for starters, beck has the basic facts wrong. as do the spinners at DU.
to wit:

“those who are just on raw feeling are not going to understand” that the county’s actions in refusing to assist the Cranicks were justified."

the county didn't refuse to assist the cranicks. the county simply voted not to fund any residential fire service whatsoever & leave it up to individuals to contract, or not, with cities for fire service.

the city refused to respond to a call outside their service area, from a non-subscriber who'd already had one previous free fire call.

beck also fails to mention that the city of 2500 people is smaller & poorer than the unincorporated county of 15,000 people.

servicing an entire county of 15000.

documents show 75% of the city's fire calls are for people outside of the city; people who, by choice, do not have a fire department because they did not want to pay taxes for one.

while i'm not saying they should have let they guy's house burn down, i can't believe that people think it's okay for those greedy bastards to expect a small, poorer city to foot the bill for their public services.

eventually it could lead to no fire service for anyone, if they bankrupt the city's fire department

95. Max, many of us including myself was reading the early threads and news...
releases and they all called the small city Fulton, which is in Kentucky. A bit of confusion. The small city(2500 people)is South Fulton, just inside the Obion county line.

This volunteer fire dept. has for years put out fires in the unincorporated Obion area without charge. The residents of S Fulton wanted a fire dept. and taxed themselves to pay for it. It is their rigs, their equipment, their firemen etc that go on these rural calls. They have not been reimbursed for any of their expenses.

The head commissioner of Obion County has said that if you live outside the city(S Fulton)and pay the subscription fee for fire coverage you will get it. If you do not subscribe, you will not get fire service.

This victim declined repeated attempts to get him to sign up. The county of Obion does not provide any kind of fire service. The commissioners struggled with this problem for two years. They finally chose two kinds of service: A fee on the light bill or subscriber service at the option of the individual property owner. A vote of 19/1 was against any sort of tax/fee increase. There is more but the complete history is out there and documented by me and Hannah Bell on this board.

97. thanks for the clarification
i had been thinking that Fulton, KY was sending it's firefighters across state lines to unincorporated Obion Co., TN.

that's it's South Fulton, TN doesn't change much, but i suspected that a large portion of the blame lay with the Obion County Commissioners.

bet they change their mind over this, and embrace "socialism" real quick.

7. Does any county money go to supporting the fire department?
If so, I would think that anyone who doesn't pay the fee should also not be required to pay property taxes for a service they aren't "allowed" to access. Have the States sunk so low now that something as essential as firefighting is now user pay? What a fucking joke your country has become.

9. Taxes are the service fee
Anyone paying taxes that is charged for a public service is being ripped off. I do not believe this was a private fire department, so they had no business charging feels.

Beck needs to do what his Mother did. That's a terrible thing to say, but he'd really be better off and so would the rest of the world.

47. It is a city fire department, & county residents don't pay city taxes.
They don't pay county taxes for fire service either, as the county has repeatedly declined to tax itself to pay for its own fire protection.

The city has 2500 people.

The unincorporated county has 15,000 people. It has a higher median income than the city.

The only payment the city receives from the county *is* the individual service fees.

Which the county voted for, instead of voting to tax itself for universal fire protection. Because they didn't want to "force" anyone to pay; this is a quote from one of their county commissioners.

you do the math. the people getting ripped off live in the city.

they purposely don't have a FD because they didn't want to pay taxes for it.

they're using the fire department of a completely different jurisdiction for free. the $75 deal was offered to people outside of the city, people who don't pay taxes to fund a FD, and many of them still refused the service.

51. The majority of city firefighters *are* volunteers. The county, on the other hand,
has repeatedly voted down proposals to fund its own volunteer fire department.

It prefers to let the city subsidize fire service for the larger, richer county.

A volunteer fire service isn't free. The proposal before the county would have cost around $400K/year.

54. I'm still right here, & Beck's position has nothing to do with mine.
Beck loooves a pay to play system like the county opted for. And he hates publicly-funded systems such as the city has, where residents are taxed universally to fund universal services.

And he, like you, obscures the jurisdiction issue.

I don't.

I think the county should tax itself & pay for universal fire service.

Not make it a matter of individual choice, then expect the city to subsidize county residents who can't, or won't, pay the fee.

even though the city taxes its own residents for universal service inside the city & is smaller & poorer than the libertarian county who won't tax its own residents, but tells them if they want fire service they can contract with the city & if they don't, they don't have to.

It doesn't respond to calls for property & kitties.

Taxing a small city to fund fire service for a larger, richer county which refuses to pay isn't a democratic principle. It's a libertarian principle.

But they'd been responding to fires even though people hadn't paid the fees, with promises people would pay. This was a last resort. They're failing financially. Basically, they said "We can't do this anymore. We only show up if you pay from now on. It's all we can afford". And I'm sorry, but I support that. It's not even their fire department. 88. i agree with you. peopel are truly missign the larger point. it's not about a mean ol FD. it's about
a whole country of jackasses who want free public services (that are paid by a much smaller, poorer group of people through taxes).

89. Do people really think this is just some unusual band of evil firefighters?
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 05:13 PM by Pithlet
Is that even likely? Or logical? Yes, these were just a band of psychopaths just waiting for this opportunity. They really didn't want to fight fires... II wonder if people are even really thinking it through much. Maybe they're just seeing House Was Allowed To Burn!!! and reacting? Otherwise it doesn't make sense.

29. If someone paid the $75 fee, and there was an accounting error
showing that the fee hadn't been paid, the FD would let the house burn, even though that house was covered. That would be very unfortunate.

93. ok skittles, this particular fire aside, what should be done? is a "city" of 2500 supposed to
provide free fire service to a county of 15,000, just because the people in that county have, for DECADES, refused to pay taxes to have a FD of their own?

a DUer posted a document that shows that for this "city", 75% of their fire calls were to people outside of their jurisdiction. how can that be sustainable?

Obion county Tennessee doesn't have a fire department, by explicit choice of the voters in that county.

Fail for getting basic facts 180 degrees wrong..

39. South Fulton = 2500 people. Unincorporated Obion County = 15,000 people.
Obion County has no residential fire service, & has voted down a volunteer fire department twice.

Instead, it voted 19-1 to let residents contract individually -- or not, as each individual saw fit -- with city fire departments funded by city residents to fight fires in the cities.

I call these "cities" but the smallest is 360 people, and all except one have less than 2600 people.

The media spin coming from both "left" & "right" is all in the same direction, & designed to obscure the basic facts of the situation.

I wonder why that is?

41. The point of government is
that we all from time to time "sponge off our neighbors" (a fascinating concept turned a few different ways).

When my house was on fire 20 years ago, the fire department came and put it out, for "free" (in that they did not bill me). My guess is that they spent more putting the fire out than I paid in taxes to support the fire department that year.

As a civil servant working a complaint department, I get calls regularly from folks who inform me that they are "taxpayers" and demand service. What they don't get is that everyone who calls me is a "taxpayer", so this is not a distinction. The other bit they are missing is that the average "taxpayer" sends in roughly $32.00 a year to support the agency I work for (roughly the cost of a plumber making a house call, before he or she gets the tools out). They will have long spent all that money by the time I get off the phone, do a bit of basic research to locate them, and assign a staff member to deal with their concern. The rest of the work actually fixing the problem is funded by other taxpayers, those who aren't calling.

44. you were, however, paying taxes for fire protection.
the people in the county are not paying taxes for fire protection.

not to the county, & not to the city.

the fee is the only payment, & that's voluntary.

the county has repeatedly chosen not to tax itself for a volunteer fire department, or to contract as a body with the cities for fire protection.

it's been going on for decades.

when the city finally got sick of it, this is the solution the county came up with -- fee for service, individual choice.

92. Yes I was paying taxes
and I chose my place to live because I actually wanted to pay more taxes and have better services. So when Hurricane Charley came through and took down 4 very large oak trees in my yard along the right of way, the city came in, cut them up and removed them for "free", even though one of them fell into my yard. In the county, it was self service, but they did provide a large place you could haul them to.

People can chose how they want to live. Given this freedom, some will make poor choices.

43. So I guess no one at the fire dept..
was interested in saving the lives of the animals regardless of whether or not a fee was paid? So basically we've monetized personal compassion? In other words, I may personally feel animals need to be helped but not if I'm not paid for it? Nice.

52. One Day...
...and I'm not sure it'll happen in my lifetime, these shitstains will look back and honestly not believe the shit they're saying. The GOTB, if it survives, is laying landminds for years and generations ahead with their verbose rhetoric and over-the-top reactions to anything and everything.

C'mon this is Libertarian Nirvana...the ultimate "Pay Go"...how "capitalism" should be. It demonstrates in full what a country under right wing domination would look like. The only thing for free will be whatever the religious poobahs throw in your direction. Of course, you have to sumbit to their doctrines. Your neighbor's house burns down and he couldn't pay the FD? Well, that'll teach him...he needs to work harder so he can afford the protection. It's earned. Yep, a true paradise on earth isn't it.

Dreck is beyond punchdrunk...his actions and reactions are extremely predictable these days and does more harm to his "causes" than good. If Democrats are able to stave off big loses and hold onto the House and Senate in November, he will be the one we thank for bringing Democrats together. There's a sleeping giant out there and it's not listening to Dreck.

63. The answer is so simple....They should have put the fire out and then
charged the family for their services. In fact, I think many of our services should be based on use. In this case, since the owners didn't pay the $75.00 they should have been taken care of and then given a bill for the entire cost to the fire department. Which would be a heck of a lot more than $75.00.

My humble opinion.

Really.

What kind of a jerk fireman lets a house burn down in front of him.

Forget following orders, forget the fee dispute, forget the rest of that crap.

Who could sit there and watch a house burn?

hell, if I'd been there I would have tried to put it out myself, and I am not a fireman. I would have at least tried to save the animals.

I don't think much of anyone who wouldn't do that.

These firemen didn't start the fire, they aren't to blame. Still, they are bags of excrement for standing there and doing nothing.
