Authorities say a woman found dead in a well died after she apparently jumped in to save a puppy.
Reporter: Associated Press

Authorities say a woman found dead in a well died after she apparently jumped in to save a puppy.

The Boone County sheriff's office says 54-year-old Marcia King-Brink, of rural Ogden, Iowa was reported missing by her husband early Saturday. Her body was found about four hours later in the well on their property.

Authorities say King-Brink went on a walk on Friday when the puppy apparently fell into the well and King-Brink jumped in to save it.

The Des Moines Register says she jumped into more than 6 feet of cold water. Sheriff Ron Fehr says King-Brink couldn't touch
the bottom of the well and couldn't pull herself out.

The puppy also died.

The sheriff says no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is pending.

2. Well, I'm suspecting foul play, even if the police don't.

4. Cover the well with a wooden lid? I don't think so. Fill it in or put a proper cover on it.
Wood is not a suitable material for a well cover and in any case abandoned wells should be properly decommissioned/filled in using proper protocols. Abandoned wells are sources of groundwater contamination, not to mention dangerous.
