We are back in the throes of a midterm election season that is as ominous as it has been bizarre. We’ve already seen a primary calendar loaded with red-shifted “shockers,” dubious to downright inexplicable results from Alaska to South Carolina.
Worse still, basic information about our public elections—exit poll results and actual vote totals—are suddenly, for the first time since Walter Cronkite was in diapers, being withheld from the public by all of the networks in concert. It appears that this information was just too dangerous when collected and analyzed by EDA and our colleagues in election forensics. When the numbers started not to add up, the media apparently decided to just withhold the numbers.
We see all the telltale signs of groundwork being laid for more red-candidate “victories” than we believe the voters have in mind. Because their samples rely on demographics derived from exit polls “adjusted” to match prior red-shifted elections, tracking polls now consistently oversample Republicans and right-wingers. No wonder the Tea Party seems suddenly so formidable! It is at least in part an illusion—but a terribly dangerous one, as these same polls unfortunately create red-shifted expectations that then wind up legitimating red-shifted elections.
From a progressive viewpoint it is sobering, alarming, and ultimately we hope galvanizing to realize that every progressive cause and core belief is now at the mercy of electoral manipulation. EDA approaches electoral integrity with a nonpartisan goal of transparency and honest and accurate recording and tabulation. But there is nothing nonpartisan about the patterns we keep finding. And there is nothing democratic about the veils that are being progressively lowered over what has traditionally been public information.
