Thousands rally in DC in a smaller, diverse counterpoint to Beck, tea party

By Margaret Talev | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Thousands of liberal and labor activists rallied in the nation’s capital on Saturday and in other U.S. cities, calling for young or disillusioned Democrats to vote in the November elections.

If conservative Fox commentator Glenn Beck’s late August rally invigorated tea party enthusiasts to vote for Republicans, many of those who turned out for the “One Nation Working Together” event saw it as their chance to shout back.

(and they justify the headline below)

Rally participants were determined but appeared fewer in number than at Beck’s “Restoring Honor” event. Enrique Alvarado, 29, a student from Boston College, charged that tea party activists are “intolerant and racist,” and said, “This crowd is a much more diverse and representative crowd of people.”

..more..

I don't know the numbers, however "appeared fewer" doesn't support the definitive headline.

1. We know like all the other tea bag rallies only about 100 showed up
at this One Nation rally. Compare pictures. That's all you need to know.

3. Smaller crowd?

Satellite photos put the crowd at 175-200,000, Beck drew 90,000 at the most.

10. i think that's a vast overestimation & have yet to see any satellite photos to back it up.
based on the photos i've seen, it looked about the same as beck-fest.

which is good in the sense that it didn't get the publicity that one did to drum up bodies

but bad in the sense that 400 organizations including all the major unions + naacp were organizing it, & imo they could have drawn more.

11. if it was during the summer
before the start of school, I would have come from CA with the whole family.

that would have been a way to draw more.

or perhaps if it was on Labor day weekend.

Still, it looked pretty awesome to me.

14. Where are these satellite photos?
I have seen nothing that would indicate a crowd of that size. If you have satellite photos please link them.

5. From the pictures I saw it looks smaller but Faux pimped for
Beck for months and the Koch brothers footed the bill.

15. First they create the lie. Then they promote it. Then they act as if it is fact.

17. The thing I noticed most wasn't the numbers but the liveliness.
Whitestock was stiff and fake and when the gospel singers were on, the whole audience sort of glared.

No comparison to this event with real people doing reals things. I hope someone compares video clips. :hi:
