that we should fear ignorance.

I'd rather have a fearful but educated populace, than a fearless ignorant one.

4. Similarities In The Times...
In many ways the fears FDR was addressing in 1933 are the same ones we are living with today. Unless you won the lottery or were born into Ben Stein's family, most of us are uncertain where things are going...if we'll have jobs or affordable life. We look around at the greed and corruption and feel powerless and frustrated. The fear is very real and shouldn't be discounted.

It's this fear that opens the door to intolerance and all the education in the world goes out the window when one's self interests are at stake. The difference between 1933 and now is our country is a whole lot more selfish...and this is what fuels the hatred that permeates not just the partisan divides but with each party as well.
