Man steals flag and replaces it with toy hippo
Call it the case of the flying hippo. Connecticut police said a man stole an American flag from Waterbury's Town Plot Park and hoisted a stuffed hippopotamus toy in its place. Twenty-three-year-old Jeffrey Kovic, of Waterbury, was arrested and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail on misdemeanor larceny, criminal mischief and conspiracy charges.

Kovic was arrested Tuesday. A message left for his public defender Friday wasn't immediately returned.

City police told the Republican-American of Waterbury that they're also seeking arrest warrants for several minors suspected of taking part in last week's prank and for damaging park bleachers.

2. Yes I also think that's odd
It also says it's a misdemeanor.

Pretty strange.

3. This is what happens when the flag becomes an object of fetish-worship.
It never takes people to a healthy place.

The reverence should be to THE PEOPLE, not to a piece of freaking cloth. We need to pledge allegiance to ourselves, as Frances Bellamy's original words called us to:

"I pledge allegiance to MY flag
and to the republic for which it stands,
One nation, indivisible,
with equality and justice for all."

Made it an OP, as it's a broader topic with facets unrelated to this thread's crystalline structure :silly:

4. I pledge allegiance to the flying hippo, of the Town Plot Park of Waterbury
and to the zoo, for which it stands
one kingdom, of animals in cages
with cotton candy and hot dogs for all

5. Sounds like there might be more to this story
was arrested and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail on misdemeanor larceny, criminal mischief and conspiracy charges.

I hope so as $100,000 for swiping a flag is idiotic.

9. Sounds like they inflated the charges to diffuse the public anger
misdemeanor larceny = stealing the flag

criminal mischief = substituting the hippo and damaging the bleachers

conspiracy charges = getting a group of teenagers drunk and saying, "Hey guys, watch this!"
