my paper,as usual

To the Editor,

President Obama is promoting a new $300 billion economic stimulus program. When he took office in January 2009 he said the $787 billion stimulus program will CREATE 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010 and unemployment will remain below 8.0 percent. Unemployment is hovering around 10 percent, and the jobs promised by Obama might hit 1.5 million by the end of 2010, but during the last 13 months we lost 5 million jobs.

The stimulus saved the jobs of municipal workers, and provided additional unemployment benefits, but it has not provided jobs in the private sector. The money went to government agencies, colleges, non-profit organizations and entitlement programs. These programs will generate annual deficits of $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion for years to come. Our government has squandered our financial resources on failed economic programs, and the American work force continues to suffer. The domestic priority should be creating millions of new jobs, and other domestic initiatives, including health care reform, should wait until the economy improves.

The administration and Congress have to reduce the size of government; cut business taxes; and give U.S. companies incentives to operate in this country, and disincentives to move operations and jobs overseas.

Donald A. Moskowitz,

Londonderry, N.H.

2. It's all semantics
The lies are buried in the semantics:

The stimulus saved the jobs of municipal workers, and provided additional unemployment benefits, but it has not provided jobs in the private sector.

Yes, it saved jobs of municipal workers, and provided EXTENDED unemployement benefits. It ALSO "saved" private sector jobs. Additionally, he "saved" private sector jobs in the auto industry, but not with stimulus money. He also "saved" alot of jobs in the banking industry, although I don't think anyone is thanking him for that. Again, that wasn't with stimulus money.

His stimulus didn't do what he said it would, unemployment isn't below 8%. That doesn't mean it was ineffective, under performing maybe. The resources weren't "squandered", and really what they were was "penny wise and pound foolish". They tried to get by on too little of a stimulus. Something tells me though that the original author would be even more upset if Obama had gotten the stimulus package that some were telling him we needed, and history has demonstrated they were probably correct.

government "'bureaucrats"

In Relaity the money went to hundreds of thousands of Teachers
Policemen, and Firefighters in their jobs.

Now that the stimulus has run out these groups are getting
laid off now. Tell that to the smart mouths on the right
who say --we really do not know if they would have been laid off.
In Columbus a whole class of Police Officers were being
laid off when the stimulus came in and saved their jobs.

Some want to ignore these facts, but keeping teachers in
the classroom, policemen on the beat and firefighters
protecting the communities is important to a functioning
society.
.
ADDed: Fact: Speaking of job developed by Private Sector:

More jobs have been added by the Private Sector in 20 months
under Obama than were created under GWB in the whole eight years.
Not good numbers, but let's keep things in perspective, I would say.

6. Private sector employment
Construction projects paid for by the stimulus use private sector construction companies to preform the work.Where I live (central Illinois)three water treatment plants are being expanded, all the work is being done by private sector construction companies, none of the three projects would have even started without stimulus money. My younger brother is working on one of the treatment plants, the only other job he has had this year (about seven months ago) was when the local power company (AmerenIP, a private sector utilities) upgraded some infrastructure, paid for by the stimulus. Almost all construction projects paid for with tax dollars are done by private sector companies and their employees, not government employees.
